KETCH ROSSi Cine Style Shooting Epic M8

tomketchslidersnow1200.jpg

A shot from this morning on Red Epic M #8 at Joshua Tree, early.

Ketch, thanks to you and Tom for doing this and letting us look over your shoulder! One quick question, is that a Dana Dolly you guys are using?

Here is to hoping we'll see some HDRx, high ISO, long exposure timelapse, with light on the foreground and the stars perfectly exposed, with the timelapse dolly, and hopefully some with the crane... :doool:

Thanks guys ;)

BTS are shot by Tom's assistant, Dustin on a 5D ;)

Ah, that explains it. The 5D is a great camera. Thanks

Here is to hoping we'll see some HDRx™, highISO, long exposure timelapse, with the timelapse dolly, and hopefully some with the crane... :doool:

I'll second that. HDRx please!

On a side note, thanks for doing all of these bts. It lowers the pain of waiting just a little bit :001_smile:

Unfortunately I don't think the longer exposure settings are enabled yet. They are still working on the timelapse features.

How bright is the lcd? Not sure how bright it was that day but I see you did not use a sunhood.

Definitely need one, the Hoodman HR-5.6, same as the one for the Red 5.6" LCD works great, we just didn't have one, but would have been nice having one ;)

Ketch, when you are in Italy to shoot "ITALIA MIA" please just call me.

I'm an expert even-though not being native Italian (that today doesn't mean anything at all!!!).

Just because there is always something else possible...

First thing is about knowing and understanding,

the second is that you know exactly what you would like to do and to achieve...

The third is just doing those two two things to get the fourth...

About the fourth as soon as I can to tell you more...

Count on it Sanjin, it will be finally a pleasure to meet you in person ;)

Steve Gibby and his wife Pamala, will also be there, and a possibility that if Tom is not half way around the other side of the world,
would join us as well, either way ITALiA MiA is a DocuFilm Series that will take many months to film, so plenty of opportunities.

EPIC Excitement

EPIC Excitement

Ketch & Tom -

It has been great following you guys over the years, you really have output some phenomenal stuff. Its great seeing all of your BTS photos, and we are thankful for your support and interactiveness with the community. We currently are working with the Quasar here in Chicago, but also plan on getting an Atom as soon as our EPICs arrive. I am very excited to see what you guys put up in the coming days and weeks. Hope to run into you at NAB.

You guys have to pay more attention to the thread ;)

I said "The KETCH ROSSi" Cine Style, and that I shoot very differently then any one else, I have my
own unique ways, of adapting Modern Technologies and various gear to fit my specific needs, using
Cinema Equipment, you will never see me employing waste of Crew and Talent on unnecessary
overloads of gear and people, also having shot with Steve, I learned that He is right, to keep things
light weight and fast to set up for the kind of out door shots on the go, and Tom does the same ;)

I was having a little fun there Ketch, not with you but the "industrial" Cine Style shoots. I REALLY see the value in lean & mean, lightweight rigs. As even Dino mentioned, you don't need a huge crew to get fantastic results.

The various setups shown in recent days go to show how flexible the EPIC system truly is.

Thanks so much guys for the kind words and support, we will keep BTS coming at will , count on it ;)

Please lets keep this thread about Epic M8 shoots, I will start a new Thread about the move to ITALY and KETCH ROSSi STUDiOS when time comes ;)

Thanks again got your support, I [promise I will continue to work hard to earn it ;)

Hi Francesco,

I respect your opinion and maybe Ketch even agrees with you in some sense (I will let him answer) ... but part of what I know from speaking to him is that he intends to make an amazing contribution back to Italy.

I have no doubt about it and I truly hope he succeeds, primarily because he deserves it!

And through his studio and also non-profits -- to help create more appreciation for the country and it's artistic and cinematic heritage ... which may not change the whole country's state of affairs, but can currently lift the spirits of so many people who may have forgotten how beautiful the tradition of art and film is there.

I hope so.

And also help them see the possibility that all this new technology brings for the future

we may be considered a third world country, and in some areas it feels like that, but we're not THAT behind! We are perfectly aware of new technologies in filmmaking, and we're using them to a great extent. Of course, Ketch's work will contribute to it, i have no doubt about it.

I think it's a lovely vision, and if any country is capable of such a grand artistic resurgence -- especially in the area of film -- it's Italy.

me too, but I'm biased :D

I can't wait to see how it unfolds :)

ditto

Sorry, are you going to make footage in cine-style (filming look) if is it possible?

"Cine style" is just that - a style of shooting, with a tendency toward its own lenses, accessories, and crew compositions - just as in "EFP style". But don't assume that images shot EFP style can't look cinematic in aesthetics. The big differentiation between EFP style and cine style shooting isn't necessarily about frame rates, but mostly about the different techniques of focusing (EFP is eye focusing by shooter, cine is by measurements, then focusing done by an AC), accessories (hand racked lens barrel and screw-on filters in EFP, FF and MB with cine), exposure (zebras and histogram with EFP, hand meters and sometimes histogram with cine), lenses (usually cine with cine, usually 35mm still or B4 2/3" with EFP), and crew (shooter doing all camera functions with EFP, split camera functions with cine between shooter and AC).

Again, horses for courses. Each style is generally better for certain genres of production and delivery medium. In essence, the two styles are techniques and setups to capture the needed aesthetic properties expected by the intended audience. To do either style well good takes a lot of practice - and neither is "better" - they're just different approaches which are appropriate for the genres serviced.

So what style are you're seeing in these photos of Tom and Ketch at Salton Sea and Joshua Tree? The minimal amount of accessories, lightweight setup, doing their own focusing by eye, etc, are very indicative of mobile EFP setups and shooting style. That said, they're using cine lenses and frame rates - so my take on that would be to classify their style of shooting in those pics as "mobile hybrid EFP". I shoot a ton of mobile hybrid EFP too - with the main difference being that I use 35mm still lenses almost exclusively on Red One and will on Epic once the Canon, Nikon, and Red Electronic mounts start shipping.

One of the really cool things about Epic is that it can be setup quickly to shoot either style! Set the camera up, accessorize it the way you need, choose your lens - and away you go.

For those of us who shoot all three - EFP style, cine style, stills - Epic is an incredibly diverse and capable camera system.

To summarize, there are a lot more factors to getting cinematic images than frame rate - and with the natural "organic" look of Red footage its really hard not to shoot cinematic images no matter what style you shoot and/or lenses you use.
