  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pretec CF thread??

Could be that Pretec or lexar asked to delete the thread or maybe it's to protect reduser from being sued by other companies. I've seen this happen on other forums and even other websites that were completely taken down because of legal action.

In lawyers we trust....

Hello redusers and moderators;

I would like to respond. I've been weighing my options here to let it drop vs. respond, but I feel like I need to chime in here.

I started the pretec thread originally, and my user name was banned from the site, and now I see the entire thread was deleted.

I am a red owner/commercial and feature producer, red #3839, and up until a week I've been so happy with the customer support, the hardware, this forum, and everything.

It boggles my mind that a starting a simple thread about using and testing of another brand's card got my username banned from the site.

I've contacted the moderators about this, with zero response.

Can someone please explain what I've done to illicit such a severe action with no explanation? Please contact me so I can take down this silly post.

Matthew Medlin.
Red #3839.

Banned even? Wow. :head_explode:

Im not sure what happened but i can understand the concerns.. Nobody from RED deleted it, we were active in that thread.

I just looked at Matthews member status and he isn't banned.. he just has not verified his email address yet so he cant post.

Ok, I'll edit my post. My old Screen Name was permanently banned, this is a new one with a different email address. The entire experience has been very jarring and strange, but if you say that Red moderators didn't ban me or delete the thread, I'll take your word for it.

Thanks,

-Matt.

It's confusing, Matt... The thread is just gone. I thought I knew why it disappeared, but I guess not. As for your old username, it's another mystery, but I do have a theory. I've sent you a PM.

Matt directed me to his old account name. The situation is different than I was aware of. Looks like starting the thread was one of his first posts and his account (and all threads and posts started by him) fell victim to the real-name gestapo. So, it seemingly didn't have anything to do with actual thread content. Unfortunately, the thread was hard-deleted with extreme prejudice, which is what happens when a user is banned and a certain option is checked. It sucks, looks like someone made a goof.

Ah this must be the list of names on the chopping block that I went through the other day that me and Christian Edwards have been pulling together. Jeff is right, if a user is banned the posts go with it.

So this was my fault.... I owe you an apology Matt... you should of received a message before the banning to give you warning to change your name.

It had nothing to do with the thread content... there was nothing there that pissed me off, it was a rather healthy discussion. We want to find cheaper cards that work as much as you guys, because frankly, making our own Compact Flash cards is rather expensive and a bit of a headache when you don't make them in the millions.

Well I'd like to add to the Lexar myth the 16G 300x UDMA cards do work in 2K Recode 28 + 36 and 4K in recode 28 and 36 - (Red 2:1 only)

Does anybody know what the main differences are between 2:1 and 16:9 Is there a major loss in quality? As this is for features shooting on Cooke primes is 2:1 the better option anyway?

Jarred-

Is there any chance of getting rid of the speed verification that's on the new builds, so that we can test new cards as they come up? Seems to be an unnecessary hinderance. I see no reason as to why RED could be held accountable for a tech/rental houses experimental practices.

Thanks.

Hey CJ.. you would be amazed what we get blamed for :) ...

The recording media is probably the most touchy thing we deal with, and as Deanan said, we really need to put the media through months and months of tests. If the media screws up, you could loose an entire day ( or more ) or shots, and it doesn't matter how much people say they accept liability for using 2nd rate cards, when something actually happens, we almost always get the angry phonecall from a studio, producer, director or camera owner.

We tried to give you guys a cookie by giving you modes where "normal" cards will work, i know it sounds a little half assed but if we were trying to screw you guys into forcing you to buy our cards we wouldn't of done it. Once you get into the highspeed constant-writing, a simple short duration speed test doesn't tell the whole story.

Jarred-

On set, RED gets blamed for everything. I'm well aware and every shoot there's always a battle to be had. But one thing that's come up more and more, is the fact there is pretty much nothing in terms of 3rd party storage/media solutions. I'm willing to go to bat for RED on most issues, but that's the one where I always have to fold in the argument.

I understand RED wanting to take precautions and save their namesake, but it also has a negative affect as well. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Most issues I've experienced, are from operator errors. And of course RED is an easy target.

With that in mind, can you tell us how the camera itself is testing the speed of the cards? "If it can do 2k overcranked, why can't it do 4k?" I get asked that quite a lot, and I don't have an answer for it. The general thinking on set is that RED wants to lock out 3rd party solutions.

Thanks for your help.

I'm still confused. How is it that anyone is actually able to select and record at modes above 2K on non-supported media? Is there a glitch on some cameras where the firmware isn't locking these modes out?

Or are there different variations of the Lexar cards out there? The card I have refuses to let me select anything other than 2K.

16:9 and 2:1 are aspect ratios. No quality difference between the two, just the 16:9 is the physically larger frame with more vertical pixels. 16:9 also requires higher bandwidth for processing as well as for storage, so therefore has lower maximum frame rates and will take up a bit more space.

As I said in the old thread, 64 gig cards can't come too soon. I've now officially sworn off doing long event or doc work with RED. The drive I used on an important event for an Academy Award nominated director failed due to mechanical error in the drive (according to RED). It costs 500.00 for data retrieval. We lost 40 of 160 gigs of irreplaceable footage. I lost the subsequent month long gig.

I can't imagine ever again recording long events or interviews on RED on the Drive. All drives fail and I got burned. Not that CF cards are fail safe but the probability is much lower, especially under production conditions.

What I really think RED should design in the future is a system that writes to two separate drives (not on the same controller - completely separate) or CF cards (dual CF modules) simultaneously. Recording to one card or drive spooks producers.

For now, I use my RED for things I can re-stage (read: fiction)

Ever since the Red One first shipped I was excited about the possibility of this being a 'Hacker's camera'. Having a computer with a lens attached would seem to open up so many possibilities.

It is very unfortunate that Red doesn't seem to realize this potential.

I think they feel it's not their job. If you want to participate in a hacking project, may I recommend the Elphel? It's early days, but intriguing.

Jarred...there's got to be a third party willing to make cards to your spec. With the Canon and Nikon DSLRs, there's a market beyond Red and besides, there's the whole "Mine's Bigger Than Yours" thing that makes faster cards pretty salable even in this market. Hell, give me specs and I'll found the damn company (you have to give me free cameras though. And lenses. Because we'll need to do tests.)

..there's got to be a third party willing to make cards to your spec. With the Canon and Nikon DSLRs, there's a market beyond Red and besides...

The problem is that there is not much incentive to make big cards that have fast sustained write speeds. DSLR's write to the card in bursts so the speed of a card doesn't matter very much. Even when they shoot so-called HD Video they are still writing way way less data that a Red One.

But there are/could be other solutions with CF raids and such. Those possibilities would be interesting to explore.

-CJ

PRECISELY!

I think you could take a RedRaid, crack it open, replace the HDDs with CFs (flashing the CF with whatever is on the HDD) and you could have yourself a 32gb "RedRam" for about $1300

Shawn-

Or just make public the pin-outs for the Lemo drive connector, and wham... done. Is there even an opportunity for this to be done? Can a company approach red with a solution, and get the pin-outs to test it? I know of several small companies who would love to do this.

-CJ

I agree that 3rd party options would be nice, but I still have to put RED on the same boat as Panasonic, Sony, Arri, and so on. How many 3rd party P2 cards exist? How many 3rd party SXS cards exist? How many HDCAM SR decks are out there that cost a lot less from a 3rd party manufacturer.

The fact is 3rd party support for RED media is just the same as it is for the other major players.

As for the crashing drives, thats a different story. Im sorry to hear your story Tim. I haven't had any problems with my personal drives, but the rentals had been buggy in the past. No major issues though. I hate to see folks completely lose data.
