  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Commercial Shot on Red wins Addy Awards

Thanks for the kind words, the spot was fun...yet a challenge as the kids are not actors. They are the actual patients, and were just released from the hospital. Nicholas directed his piece, he literally decided when and what we would shoot. At one point he threw a banana at the director. It was all shot in one day at one location.

Can you tell us anything about the post work you did on this spot? Did you use filters for camera, or was the soft-look obtained in post?

The only on camera filters used were ND. Shot 4K HD. We used two Reds because it was real children and all shot in one day (in total it was 1X :30 and 3X :15). One Red stayed on the Optimo 24-290 all day, the other used a Techno 18-90 zoom and some Ultra primes. One of the close-up's was shot with a Lens baby PL lens, maybe that's the softness you are referring to.

Post workflow was simple, off-line edit on Final Cut using proxies straight out of camera.
Used Crimson to export DPX sequences (1080P) w/ handles. Conformed on Smoke and graded on Davinci from DPX. Final product was 1080P, which was archived on HDCAM SR.

Working with children can be frustrating but when it works it can be very moving. Yours worked. Congrats.

Boy, no kidding.
The last commercial I shot that involved children was for a dental clinic.
1pm crew call setup, kids will arrive by 2pm for the shoot.
So I show up and start to pull gear, and the office manager says...
Can you guys do this in a hurry, the kids skipped school and have been here all day waiting.
