  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet 2/3" Fixed @ CES

Really exciting stuff!

I assume that the EPIC-S will be out before the fixed Scarlet, since it is now an EPIC...has that been confirmed?

I can't find the posting, but I thought Jim said Scarlet Fixed 8X was in a different production line and cycle and would be available shortly after Epic-X. I got the impression (take with a grain of salt) that Scarlet Fixed time frame might be March/April. Forgive me if I've misspoken. :confused5:

Not at all sure this is an accurate assumption. I don't think anything like this has been suggested or confirmed.
Given Jim Jannard's timeline below, I don't think it's an unreasonable inference, though. Previously (and maybe too long ago to still be valid) it was said that Scarlet's release would follow a couple of months after Epic-X's. That could mean late April -- or maybe sometime in May or even June. If Epic-S begins production in May, then it could follow Scarlet, coincide with it, or even precede it.
7. EPIC-Ms are currently being produced in low quantities and will step up just a bit this month (January). Production EPIC-X is scheduled to begin small production end of February with a fairly significant ramp up in March. Major volume begins in April. Many of you will have your EPIC-X by NAB. EPIC-S should begin production in May... depending on EPIC-X orders.

Regarding release timelines:

After admittedly lurking on these forums for several years, my personal opinion is to treat pieces of information from the Red team regarding release dates as separate "entities" that supercede each other...

It may not be the wisest to "stack" the information to try and guess a release date, especially if the pieces of information themselves became available over a long period.

...either way--and I'm just trying to see the silver lining here--This is kinda like the excitement of chasing the girl you've had your eyes on. It's fun in itself!

(in a non-stalker context) =P

You will probably see some of this kind of stuff coming when the camera is closer to release and early production models are in the hands of people like Marc Pederson and Steve Gibby. That is still a few months away.
A few full resolution tiffs or high quality jpeg stills would show more about image quality than a highly compressed Vimeo video or something similar.

You can count on it David :)

Since receiving some of the very first Red One cameras I've always taken the time for all you friends here on Red User to share my usage styles, field use impressions, camera setups, footage results, and project details. Hopefully each of you would do the same if you were given the opportunities I've had with Red...

For security reasons I've never posted the locations I'd be at in advance - but rather I've almost always posted cool stuff shortly after coming back from interesting world locations. Trust me, I'll definitely be good for that with Epic and Scarlet - as usual, from our work expect some high-quality JPEGs, TIFFs, and an R3D or two when I'm able, along with behind the scenes shots of my crews in action.

Fun times ahead everyone...:)

Heh heh feels just like 4 years ago all over again doesn't it Gibby :)

Amen to that Jarred...:)

The thing is it just keeps getting better and better and better...thanks to all vision and hard work of Red Team :)

The unbelievably fun part of all this is taking these cameras way out on location and really pushing the boundaries with them. The whole creative process starts with nailing some good images...then comes the enjoyment of pushing and pulling them every which way we need/want in post.

In a long career in this industry I don't remember having anywhere near this much fun before...:thumbup1:

David in my experience apart from doing a test shoot which is always best, then the next best thing is native files from a camera, whether it be EX, AVCHD or R3D files and putting them through your own edit systems, l agree Vimeo tests can be very subjective.

Been playing with r3d clips and Redcine since build 17 of the original R1M 2+ years ago. 4k, 3k, and 2k. If Scarlet performs at least as well as the original R1M clips using Redcine-X 356 I will be a very happy camper. I truly expect it will do better.
I would put a deposit on one today without seeing any footage at all. I am that impressed by Red's progress and performance so far. Redcode raw just rocks. Using the same early build 17 R1 clip of a night time Tokyo street scene shot by Paul Leeming in 2007?, I have seen easily a two stop improvement in usable DR from the software improvements alone. Similar improvements in better color rendering too as well as much more sophisticated image manipulation tools. More than 300 alpha build cycles of Redcine-X in less than a year!
I have not been this excited about the prospect of a new motion picture camera,( I refuse to call it a video camera), since I got my hands on a Bolex 16mm in the early 70's.

I would love to see some hi-res detailed on-screen menu shots that show the histograms and menu layouts etc... like dpreview.com does. these iphone shots are just teasers...

Menu structure is changing... we'll post when finalized.

Jim, are there still going to be Builds for the fixed after it has shipped and sold to the customer?

We are no longer making the 2.8" touchscreen.. it was impossible for any normal sized person to use.

Pity, cause Cinevate's Cyclops was being adjusted to fit this screen size and would have been a good enough way to skip the Bomb EVF which is way out of my budget. I hope someone would suggest a cheaper viewfinder....
