  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HD SDI out of EPIC, bit depth...

10bit Progressive frame in both 1.5g and 3g modes.

Segmented Progressive to come (psf) eventually if anyone actually still needs it :)

I need PSF! HDCAM and HDCAMSR wont recognise 10bit without it!

We generally record to HDCAM or HDCAM SR straight from the camera and use that as dailies at the moment.
I do have a RED ROCKET CARD but neither deck HD or SR will work unless enable PSF is checked!
Sony claim your 25P isn't a standard 25P so we need to enable PSF to allow the decks to think its 50I (Progressive)

And i certainly DONT edit RED files from HDCAM!!!

Hey I'm PAL so I don't know if its a PAL thing or not!

The way I found this out was when I tried to send a HDSDI signal out of a RED ROCKET to my patch panel and into something else.

The signal wasn't strong enough so I had buy an AJA HDSDI re-clocker. My Tektronix WFM 7020 was seeing the signal correctly as 25P but neither Sony deck would see a signal unless I changed the settings to ENABLE PSF.

haha, i was just rousing you a little bit. do whatever works for you! i'm sorry to hear about that issue with the sony, though... that's kinda silly.

Has anyone notice that every swear word is 4 letters long.

Like F@#K, C@#T, S@#T you get the idea....

Well SONY is another swear word in my books! I hope EPIC doesn't also turn out to be the same as its 4 letters long!!!!

lol, that's why they all have letters...

Epic-X
Epic-M
Epic-S

:) now you've got 5 letters.

How about the H.264 dailies module RED is developing? Just switch to that and you won't have to keep up with the tapes.

great for dailies though.

and as for the editorial, a full maxed out mac pro with dual rockets, with a hefty size raid is still cheaper than a HDCAM or SR deck... you can throw an LTO in there too.

really no clue how SR tape has survived this long...

Sure...

Need both, though (dailies and editorials...)

I know for sure that the transcoding for editorials step is the one first on the kill-list around where I work.

I am not totally comfortable with that, because of the added security a confirmed transcode gives as to data integrity.

It is a reccuring theme, though...

well i feel like it's no different than capturing from tape, except that the more you run the tape, the more you risk/damage it.

plus you can get faster than real time with a transcode.

i think it's more of a, we bought this thing for 120k... we are gonna use it even when it makes little sense anymore...

Edit using the RED generated proxies! Rocket is a great way to go too- especially now that RED is selling "Battle Tested" (read "used") Rockets right in the RED Store.

In the end your editing offline anyway. The time spent importing tape to the NLE could be used to generate a cleaner offline image, not to mention a quick first light by your DIT and DP which allows for a closer-to-final image going into editorial. And, simultaneously, you are working to create dailies that look great so producers and clients get a better idea of what things will look like in the end without having to explain what a LUT is or some other part of the process. I've generated full days of dailies- transcoded to DVD within an hour of wrap by keeping on top of creating the ProRes files and making sure the DIT approves first lights with the DP throughout the shooting day. It's not a hassle, it's a process! Give it a try sometime. I think you'll quickly ditch the deck.

Yes we need it! 1080 psf will come in very handy for those wanting to use microwave transmitters with encoders not designed to handle 1080p.
