  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION 1.8" and 2.5"

I swear, it's a full time job keeping up with everything around here. :-)

So...the 2.5" stations are not for SSD, but regular SATA drives? What is the main purpose or use for these? Short term backing up of footage on shoots or during projects?

Those WD drives sure are cheap, but obviously long term backup isn't good on harddrives.

So...how are people going to be using these 2.5" stations?

Thanks!

Kevin

The 2.5" Station accepts both SSD and spinning drives......see RED.com.

Yes, offloading/backup from the CF or 1.8" Stations would seem to be the most likely use for them.

You could make a STATION stack with a 1.8" module and two 2.5" modules. Offload to two separate HDDs in one shot, plus another RAID on the DIT's system. Redundancy, ability to hand off a drive with files, etc.. 2.5" HDDs are cheap and you can buy them anywhere. 2.5" SSDs are also an option and will become an increasingly popular option as the price and capacities normalize compared to HDDs over the next year or two.

Long term backup is still best-served by various larger and more redundant HDD solutions and LTO-4/LTO-5 tape. ...For now.

Just consider that data management, backup and archival are not about specific tools. They are strategies or a process that one goes though. These 2.5" STATION modules give us an option of convenience.

Cannot wait to move our whole operation over to SSDs and using 2.5"HDDs for data moves from set to post (backing up on set to RAID and LTO). We have a shoot coming up in LA with post downunder. Fedexing 2.5s across the globe will be a real boon. Any word yet when we can order media and also SSD drive for R-1?

Last we heard, that magic day should be tomorrow.

First limited batch of Side SSD modules for the RED ONE and SSD Media go on sale next Wed.

Happy holidays :)

The 2.5" RED STATIONS will fill an easy onset multiple copy backup solution for me since I don't have the resources for a proper DIT cart with a good RAID array.

Likewise, as projects move through editing I plan on regularly making backup copies to 2.5" drives, keeping everything regularly in triplicate or more, between local drives, NAS, and the 2.5 drives.

the 2.5" station lets you offload footage onto normal 2.5" bare drives, SSD or spinning. using bare drives is incredibly cheap, and fast, and the 2.5" drives are much more robust and resistant to abuse than the larger 3.5" drives.

The price of a RED Station pays for itself rather quickly when you start pushing around half a dozen bare drives instead of even the cheapest decent already-enclosed portable drives.

Cool, do you guys have a case you use/prefer to hold/carry the bare drives?

Ok, its WEDNESDAY!!!! Its RedMag SSD 1.8 day!!! Its Red module SSD day!!! Everyone wake up, wake up, WAKE UP!!!
Am I the only one under the tree in my footie pajamas?
C'mon, lets open the presents.

Until today, I have never been accused by my peers of "gushing" over Red (not that Red hasn't been deserving - I love my Red). But today, Wednesday, December the 8th, in the year of our Lord, 2010, I am the dog on the bacon bits commercial.

Interesting article on the failure rate of ssd's. Any chance we can find out who make's the ssd's inside the red media?

Very interesting indeed. It makes sense that the ROF would be lower than with spinning disks - definitely a good thing in this arena.

I'm sure some enterprising individual will tear apart the media sooner or later to see what's going on inside.

Will the SSD drives be at the Red Store

Will the SSD drives be at the Red Store

Does anyone know where they will put the SSD drives up for sale ....at the Media section of the Red Store?

Just out of curiosity, why is that?

The only reason I would say that MAYBE they are more robust is that 2.5" drives were designed for laptops. Therefore, since laptops tend to get thrown around, the drives had to be designed to get thrown around also.

Tim,

This is what I am using: http://www.hudzee.com/

However, I am using these in an office environment. They are tough, and have padding. But I haven't used them in a remote environment. But then again, if I was in a remote environment, I do not think I would feel comfortable using bare drives in the first place ...
