  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION 1.8" and 2.5"

Ryan-

Thanks for posting about our Hudzee hard drive cases! When someone is taking a large quantity of hard drives on set, I recommend using a Pelican Case, and placing the Hudzee with hard drive inside.

Just in case anyone reading this wants to purchase our Hudzee Hard Drive Cases from our website, use coupon code "REDUSER2010" for $5 off. We also have bulk orders available at a discount.

One last pitch: we have a special "White" Hudzee that holds a 2.5" bare drive.

Todd - while we have you here...

Can you mix 3.5" and 2.5" cases for the bulk pricing?

Thanks.

wow - shipping's a little steep.

Well, my email said "feel free to check back on the status in a couple weeks." So, I would guess that they are planning on several weeks to get going on shipments for people who didn't have backordered drives.

I've read this whole thing as, if you don't already have a back-order for a RED Drive or RED RAM, then you're not getting an SSD or module any time soon. If you do have a back-order on the old media, you are not automatically signed up to receive any of the new SSD stuff, you still have to place an order for SSDs and modules. People with the existing back-orders get shuttled to the front of the line.

As much as I'd love the new SSD toys, I don't need more R1 media right now. So I'm content to wait a bit -- just as long as I can get all the 128 and 256 SSD's that I want to go with my EPIC cams, I'll be happy. I almost placed an order for 128GB SSD's, just to be in the queue, but I'm holding for the 256GB's as the extra capacity will help with my remote shooting. They're also the best deal per GB and it adds up quick when equipping more than one camera.

Maybe I'm late..but I want to know if SSD Module REDONE may be use on EPIC...
It'll be great.and very smart for RED USER.

the REDONE SSD module only works on the REDONE.

Too bad....

It's difficult for me to understand why RED release this SSD slot only for RED ONE same week that you release EPIC_M.

Accessory must be similar for this type of camera ( like other do...Arri, AAton..)

The RED One SSD module is the new slot that goes on the camera.
The Redmag SSD 128GB is the actual media.

So makes sense that a slot made for the Red One wont fit the Epic.

I think you are confusing the Module and the redmag?

Well, keep in mind that the RED ONE (MX and M) will remain in service not only during the initial deliveries of small amounts of Epic-Ms, but also while people are waiting for their deliveries of Epics/Scarlets. And even once all the initial Epic and Scarlet orders are filled, I believe there will still be quite a few RED ONE cameras out and about.

This module allows RED to unify their media platform to the new 1.8" SSD REDMAG. Which is substantially faster and cheaper (per GB) than existing CF cards.

And best of all, it's an option. If an owner is tired of shooting on smaller cards, or doesn't like using HDDs, they can upgrade their RED ONE with this module. If they are moving on to SSD with Epic and want to unify their media internally, they can upgrade. If they just think the REDMAGs look nice and want to use them, they can upgrade.

But if someone is perfectly fine with the camera they have been using and doesn't see a need to change it - they don't have to.

What is the power in of the Red Station.
I power my hard drives for downloading off of Anton Bauer batteries (with hot swap plate) to avoid any power problems on set (someone pulling the power, generator going out,...).
I am hoping the Red station can be powered off of 12V as well.

It says on the Red Store page that it does work with both Epic and Scarlet

Haha... Almost 15mm thick for the 1TB model it seems. Way to go Seagate, you just designed a 2.5" HDD that won't fit in a lot of 2.5" trays, bays, enclosures, sleds, etc... Never mind notebooks.

I don't know about the maximum clearance on the RED Station. The 12mm thick WD 1TB HDDs fit. Could always grind a couple mm off with a dremel tool. :)

Are these the drives you are talking about?

At 5200 RPM wouldn't they cause a bottle neck in transfer speeds for data management?

Those are the WD 1TB 2.5" drives and they are 12mm thick. They work in the RED Station, as shown by Jarred in another thread. I said they work in my post above, but it looks like it was difficult to understand that and Deanan subsequently pointed out as well that they fit.

The new Seagate 1TB 2.5" Enterprise Class (Constellation.2 series) will be 14.8mm thick. I don't know if they will fit in the RED Station or not.

Doesn't matter if the drives are 5400rpm or 7200rpm... 2.5" mechanical HDD's are going to be a bottleneck if that is what you are offloading to directly. Also rotational speed is not the only factor in HDD performance -- there's platter size, areal density, number of heads, etc.. 2.5" HDD's are typically slower than their 3.5" counterparts due to their platter size, fewer heads, etc.. The SSD mags can unload at about 250MB/s or so they say. The fastest 2.5" HDDs write at about an average 60MB/s. You do the math... You will want a storage system or RAID that can sustain 300MB/s or better if you want to offload the SSD mags at maximum speed. At maximum speed, we should theoretically be able to unload a completely full 256GB SSD mag in about 18 minutes. If you're dumping it to a 500GB WD Black 2.5" 7200rpm HDD that can write at an average 65MB/s, it's going to take about 80 minutes.

Looks like you could get pretty close to max speed (225MB/s) by offloading to G-Raids using a G-Tech 4-port PCIe card in a 4-lane slot

http://www.g-technology.com/products/g-raid.cfm?featured=gr

Cheaper than going to a RAID 5, and you can back up to 2 of them at the same time, for actual device redundancy

Any drawbacks to this, Jeff, besides it not being 300MB/s, and writing to 2 of them simultaneously would slow things down a little more?

Just musing over the DIT aspects of this...

I'm seeing a quote on this page, from Deanan

http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=52455&page=6

Which states "At 5k 2:1 and REDcode 5:1 (which will likely be what most features shoot with), a 64GB SSD will be about 12-13 minutes."

Which is about 5 gigs a minute - which I'm getting right now with my MacBook Pro and eSata express34 adapter, to and from non-RAID G-Drives.

So if Epic RC 5:1 5k 2:1 is 5 gigs a minute, and I can move 5 gigs a minute already with my laptop eSata and no RAID, I can obviously go way faster with a MacPro/4 port PCIe 4x set-up to G-Raids.

(4) 4 TB G-Raids, for 16 TB's of storage, are $1800, plus the $250 4 port card, which supposedly gets you pretty close to the max speed of the Red SSD card.

A 16 TB Maxx Digital Evo 2k/4k is $8600, plus the SAS card, and you lose the drive space you need for RAID 5 or 6, which you don't need with the G-Raids because you're writing to 2 of them, and with either G-Raids or RAID 5/6, you'd better be backing up to LTO anyway.

So even if the G-Raid setup only goes 150 MB/s to 2 drives simultaneously, that's still 7 gigs a minute, pretty close to the "8GBs-10GBs to multiple locations in 1 minute's time" MC says we need in this post

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?p=689357#post689357

Except , of course, the producers are buying the G-Raids, not me dropping 8 large on a 16 TB RAID 5...

What flaws are there in my logic here, I know there's probably a few haha
