  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

Impressively strong-looking hand(s). She must give great massages to overworked/overstressed husband.
I'm very appreciative of this quality after last nights all-handheld marathon.

The 8x fixed should have an optional wide adapter to extend the range. Whether or not its "zoom though" probably isn't that important, one should be with every camera kit.
Typically non zoom through's are much smaller/lighter/wider, but have to be removed for the long end.

Scarlet 8X Fixed is nearly done. I like it. So does everyone here.

A couple of those are on my shopping list too... :) Can't wait!

If I were to buy a camera...
(1) Get the fixed lens 3K Scarlet
(2) Get the S35 5K Epic Lite
(3) Wait for the FF35 6K Epic

My favorite brains are the 2/3" Fixed and the FF35. I would love to have both of these brains, as I feel that they would pretty much cover every option I would want to shoot.

Yes..option 1 and 3 seems a good match.
Fixed scarlet is sort of a given as it offers everything to shoot
at the lowest price. It can be used to experiment with...untill FF35's out.

Yeah, it just depends on S35 Epic Lite. The 2/3" Fixed will be the perfect starter camera for those just getting into Red, which could tide you over until FF35 is released. If the price is right for Epic Lite though, you are going to have a much more versatile camera, so that can kind of change your purchasing plan...

However, I am sure you would make enough money with the Epic Lite to justify getting a 2/3" Fixed anyway, haha. :}

Same camera, different name, just to justify a price increase. Hmm...

I have to agree. While I am in LOVE with everything RED is doing (5K, HDRx, incredible color science, delivering the holy grail(s) of camera etc., etc.), I'm a little bummed about the name change (seemingly) warranting a price increase.

If I'm being perfectly honest with myself, it makes a lot of sense to bump up the price of the Scarlet S35 (RIP) so as not to cannibalize the EPIC-X market. As many have pointed out here, the proposed Scarlet S35 was a little too close in essential specs and functionality to its older brother. Too close for the rental house's comfort (who I don't blame for girding their loins).

I was beginning to wonder when RED would realize their Scarlet S35/Robin Hood ambitions--taking everything but frame and data rates from the rich (IE., the soon to be industry standard EPIC-X) and generously giving it away to the poor (us destitute indies)--might bankrupt their rich markets.

Not to be too melodramatic (I know, too late for that :-), but thinking back about it now, when the whole Scarlet S35 business was announced, it was kind of like receiving a phone call from a friend who had just won the lottery. That friend comes running over to your house, starts jumping up and down, blurting out the winning million dollar Powerball numbers as you sit in stunned silence, and in that intervening moment of delirium, while throwing ever increasing "K"s around, they unthinkingly promise you a million dollars for just being such a good friend--they promise you the Scarlet S35. Understandably, you really get excited. You start thinking about all the things you could do with the money (the S35). You start to dream bigger. You start to plan trips and productions...

This price increase and name change kind of feels like the next morning when reality has set in on the friend. They give you a call, their voice no longer full of crazed joy. They sound sober, they clear their throat a lot and explain that they can't, in fact, give you that money after all. They have to take care of themselves for the time being. They promise they won't forget you.

And while you can't fault that friend for thinking of their better interests first, it is a bit of let down to have been swept up in the excitement (IE., spent years on Reduser dreaming about the Scarlet S35 and how perfectly suited to my needs it would), only to find out that you're potentially price-pointed out of luck.

Of course, and I'll be the first to point this out, the irony of my gripes about a price increase is that you guys ARE the reason Moore's law has any jurisdiction over digital film cameras. You guys have single cameradily slashed camera prices all across the board. And, ironically, because you've given us Mice a cookie (The RED ONE), we want a bakery (affordable Scarlet S35).

I'm still, and will forever be, incredibly grateful for all that you guys do. I know in truth it's a completely accidental (Read: everything subject to change) bait and switch, but it still hurts in the end. I know you can't please everyone. And that you guys "had no idea what you were doing."

But if I can request something in the next two weeks before your Epic Lite announcement it's this: please don't raise the price too high...

Your fan,

Justin

Where has it been said about the price hike apart from the $1000 HDRx!! why is everyone assuming it will happen!!

To my knowledge, which is limited to what l read on here, that not been mentioned or have l missed something!

Yes, this is the sentiment spread a little bit all over the corners among the people who I've personally spoken with, yet through the most distinct roads, on the phone, emails, PMs in different boards, etc. We can hope, at least, Jim is listening and he will give us what our money can afford.

It's not certain, but Pretty much of given.
Jim said the s35 is Now part of the epic family and the change Will also be noticeable in price.

Scarlet = lower cost red cameras.
Epic = higher cost red cameras.

If you change a camera from the lower end product line to the higher end and you know the price will change too, which direction do you think the price will change?
Of course, only Jim and his team knows if and how much.

The R1 is not being discontinued is it! So in price order, Scarlet x 8 Epic Light R1 Epic as reflected in cost.

that is how I see it considering R1 comes with some pro in outs, but who knows what will happen I do find it funny how many people have already come to the conclusion it will cost 18k.... it might but lets wait until Red tells us before we announce the sky is falling.

If its 18K there wont be takers, too near Epic, replaces RED1 ! hoping about $10,000 to $12,000 l know this is a RED forum BUt PMW F3 is a serious camera and will hit the streets at about $11,000 with 3 lenses (from reports seem quite good) $ 16,000 Sony wants RED market, forget the RAW re Baked in codec as you can grade Ex footage jusy fine.

As always stated l want a Scarlet, just making a pont.

Sony wants some of REDs market!!

You will not likely achieve deep enough DOF in low light conditions with FF35 without also exceeding the ability of silicon sensors to deliver wide dynamic range low noise images.
There are styles of shooting where 2/3" or 16mm sized imagers and optics are the superior choice. The beauty of the fixed brain is that it is cheaper and more compact than any aftermarket servo zoom lens alternative with similar range and speed. Such a lens doesn't even exist for FF35 and would not be usable for run and gun if it did.
With a modular system one is not locked into one or the other choice as the sole format of your camera package.

By today's specs you are certainly correct. My last wish there was a hope for the future. However I'm not sure if you are talking about the limits of current sensors or the theoretical limits of silicon sensors in general, for I have no knowledge of the latter. If the former then you are assuming that Monstro will be no more sensitive than Mysterium X... And we don't yet have a full appreciation of what HDRx™ brings to the table.

I am betting that the touch focus system that the gang is working on will include an auto gain, allowing us to set and/or ride both the shutter and aperture. I am betting that Canon USM motors on many of the L series lenses will be plenty fast enough for most run and gun situations, but I am only prognosticating.

I have no expectations with regard to modularity, as Epic and Scarlet 2/3 are so different in form factor, but if I can shoot the same lenses then a lot of accessories can cross over.

Well, let's think about this for a second. Granted this is speculation based on deductive reasoning, but let's do it for grins.

The EPIC Lite probably uses the same chassis as the regular EPIC. They spent a lot of time designing that, making it small and light and putting some nice cooling in it. It's a second generation camera body and by RED's own admission, a better design than the RED ONE.

The RED ONE originally cost something like $17,500 and AFAIK you can only buy it now with the MX sensor for $25,000. The EPIC's main advantages over RED ONE are:

- A re-designed camera body that's smaller, modular and lighter
- 5K resolution and faster frame rates
- HDRx™

Since the same camera body is almost certain, what's else can they do to lower the cost and make it "Lite"? Jim has left some clues that frame rates and bandwidth is a cost driver. Let's say they get rid of that and you're back at RED ONE frame rates. But RED ONE still cost $25,000. So let's say they went back to the old RED ONE sensor. You're still getting a newer, redesigned and arguable better camera body. Could they do this and still price it less than the original $17,500 RED ONE? Man, I have a hard time seeing that but who know. I guess we'll find out in 2 weeks.

I totally agree.

But increasing Scarlet's price, giving it a more similar name, and (implied, but not confirmed) upping the features makes that problem WORSE, not better.

I think the correct solution would've been to keep the price point but reduce the features. That wasn't an option, of course, because the internet would have BURST INTO FLAMES.

My guess about the upcoming 'exciting Scarlet news' is that we're getting a compromise. We get a 'New Scarlet' at the ~$7-8k point but 'Old Scarlet' moves up to 'Epic Light' rather than vanishing.

My thought is that setting features and prices so that all three models sell will be very tricky. Especially without artificially limiting things on the low end Sony/Canon style.

Ever heard of Moore's law? I hope you're not right, but fear it. For two years the price of the Epic Light has been 7K. HDRx is as far as we know the only thing to change this price. On the Fixed Scarlet it meant $1000, it's the same feature, so why should the price increase be $5000-10.000 instead?

Now, a new market will take off. 35mm DOF adapters for Scarlet 2/3. Release date for the new accessory at the Red store please?
