People bashing the cam, might want to read all the specs. It's priced right in the middle of the PMW-EX shoulder mount line, plus is expandable and offers S-Log (via SDI). The sensor is new, developed in house at the Cinealta division. So it remains to be seen how well it performs.

If this camera makes great looking 1080p video, the people who should be worried is ARRI. Combine this with a Ki Pro mini and you have an affordable Alexa.

I find it interesting they made the announcement the day after Jim announced that Epic would be shipping soon.

For a variety of reasons, none of which have to do with Red, this camera is going to be popular with a lot of people. It won't be a Red vs Sony issue either.

Sony's a business, not a camera maker. Making cameras is what they have to do to make the stock price go up.

That's just crap!

come on guys... I have a Sony Betacam SP deck that has been working every day without fail (except for routine maintenance) for over 11 years. Amazing. And I have Sony cameras that has been to hell and back and they still work. Credit where credit is due.

Thank you. I love red and excited about my epic, but it's time to take a break from Reduser, it's like watching Fox news.

And thanks, again, but you're way too rational...

Not only ARRI payer actually ;-) but how to explain it differently to the Alexa potential customer? :001_huh:

When respected independent reviewers get their hands on it and start testing it.
Until then, it's up in the air.

it has occurred to me that I have some equipment that still works fine that is probably older then some of the people that post here.. I guess I am giving my age away :)

I've had my EX1 for 3 years and it is still a badass little camera. I think this f3 is going to fly. There is a time and a place for almost everything. Not so sure about the dual link SR stuff, seems like that is not where people want to go.

Sony Engineers are great. I just wish someone could liberate them ala the Great Escape. ;)

Technically speaking most of their products are top notch. It's just frustrating when you know their engineers' work is getting hamstrung by annoying usability decisions like recording 4:2:2 8bit GOP when they could have at least gone with something like Cineform who I'm sure would have been more than happy to license their tech out.

And to get 4:4:4 I have to buy a firmware update in 6 months as well as an external recorder? Pass. I don't care if it lasts 20 years. I don't want high compression MPEG2 today let alone 20 years from now.

Sony gear is always well made, no question there. It's just that they have a tendency to underspec and over state. HDCam @ 4:1:1, 1080p cameras with 1,440 wide sensors, PsF pretending to be progressive, 4k projectors that are actually quadHD.

There seems little doubt that the camera will be pretty damn good and will sell like hotcakes and will probably hold together for years. Importantly, it will probably also hold it's value - which I think might be great for many when Scarlet ships.

However, this and the Panny are, at this early stage, already under-specced and under-featured compared to Red's upcoming cameras. I'll wager the same will not be true of Epic and Scarlet when they ship - whenever that may be. And if I'm wrong and Sony or Panasonic or Canon or whoever do manage to up the ante on Red, then all the better for us. Just remember, if that happens, it was Red that pushed them to it.

Can't fault Sony on the build quality of their serious pro gear. Definitely holds up to a lot of use with reasonable care.

I'm not bashing Sony. They make good gear. Just pointing out that their overriding priority is to their shareholders. While their cameras are good, you can't claim that they are driven to give the Pro user the absolute best that technology has to offer. They provide what is in their interest to provide and the market allows them to. I own Sony Pro gear. By and large its fine, but I've also been disappointed in some of that gear over the years.

Well, I’m not ashamed to say that I loathe Sony. Back in the day I went with JVC’s D9 offerings over Sony’s and never looked back once. Better implementation of superior tech at a more reasonable price. Same for my Panasonic Plasma TV and Xbox (that’ll really rile some people up). And same will go for RED. Of course I know many people who love Sony and swear by their products. To each their own for sure. If you bought it and it works for you, all the power to ya.

But I wonder why it would be a surprise that people that don’t like their products would find their way onto reduser. As far as I’m concerned RED has always been doing things that should have been done by these companies ages ago. That’s what brought me here anyway. I think it’s kind of nice to have a place that feels safe enough to condemn the status quo of the industry.

Well said, Leo. The very idea that you can't express an opinion about Red's competitors is looney. This is RedUser, if Sony were to listen to the unpopular and negative comments here, they might learn something about their customers and provide better products for us. I would welcome that change at Sony and I think forums like this hold a great deal of weight when making decisions, or they should.

Yeah like all the television spots and music videos that are being shot on the 7D/5D/T2i. Most of the movies I've seen shot using uncompressed 1080 look very good ...like Predators.
Big screen included. Everyone in this business should beware that a HDSLR like 5D Mark II in countries such as France, for example, is not less popular, if not even more, than certain traditional tools. I'm strictly speaking about professionals, no less. With line-skipping, pixel binning and every flaws known on earth :-)

Perhaps popular with producers and freelance DPs who can't afford otherwise but I'm yet to talk to a DP who has the choice who would EVER choose to shoot motion on one. Most are quietly praying for the whole thing to just blow over.

Why do you think everyone is on these forums bitching about how long Scarlet is taking? Everyone is busting to get hold of one. And, at least with an Epic or Scarlet, all your current Canon lenses will fit and work - electronically. Doubt that will be the case with either the Sony or the Panny. With the Sony, you want control over your lenses, buy Sony, so you have to sell all your kit. With Scarlet, just swap bodies.

Jeff, I read your post and so obvious statement of yours as “that their overriding priority is to their shareholders” made me stop and think.

I remember the elementary school and some of the famous laws they were teaching me like “body put in the motion stays in the motion” etc. made me think why we have to make the laws to state the obvious.

What is obvious for one is not obvious for the other.
Then, I have noticed your signature text at the bottom.
In Business, Everyone Is A Protectionist. If They Weren't, They Wouldn't Be In Business Long.

I never thought this way, you are 100% right, most companies fidelity is to its shareholders.
It takes one customer or technology devoted totalitarian ruler to be an exception I guess.

That is why we see no competitive movement to RED products.

Not worth to fight this battle, nothing for the shareholders there.

And if there is something in it, it will be just profit motivated for them.

Very difficult decision to make for big guys. How you sell it to your shareholders?
