I have to get to bed early tonight... very early flight tomorrow. Have to get to bed early...

I know things are subject to change but I will ask once more. Jim. Would it be reasonable to expect my Epic (stage two 1761) prior to NAB 2011. If your Scarlet prediction is accurate it would seem possible?

That's the plan. Let's see if we can hit the plan.

Does the Sony boss stay up late and do this stuff? I'm curious...

BTW... who IS the Sony guy? Really. Who is he? Do we even know his name?

I'm sure you can find a spot to snooze on the Global Express

Howard Stringer? He certainly doesn’t post on the Sony forum.

*Ok, so I’ve never been on the Sony forum, maybe he does.

Apparently he is SIR Howard Stringer -
From the Sony site:

"Prior to joining Sony, Sir Howard had a distinguished 30-year career as a journalist, producer and executive at CBS Inc. As President of CBS from 1988 to 1995, he was responsible for all the broadcast activities of the company including entertainment, news, sports, radio and television stations."

He must have spent SOME time on set... but a lot has changed since 1995.

Maybe he's that mouthy guy who was at the "Crossing The Line" screening NAB 2007. :001_tongue:

I don't think Sony has a clue what they are doing. Or they are just so slow to react to markets that they miss the mark by 3-4 years.

I was at the WABE conference in Vancouver, BC this morning at one of the few Sony press conferences announcing the F3L/K and it was a complete joke.

First they spent a solid 25 minutes going through a presentation devoted soley to bashing on bayer filtering, CMOS sensors, and rolling shutter artifacts.

Then right after they spend all that time trying to convince me that paying $76,400CAD for a CCD camera that can only shoot 1080 is a far better choice than any "CMOS sensor camera" they announce the F3 which.... Take a guess... Uses a CMOS sensor. But no wait, this is their Exmor technology, and it's made by "the company that has more than 10 years experience in designing digital cinema cameras" (actual quote of the presenter) and so it is obviously not the same kind of CMOS which we just spent 25 minutes talking about because we know how to make the best CMOSs on the market.

Yea OK Sony. What a joke. Half that presentation was them taking stabs at RED. They essentially tried to tell us 10 bit 444 was "just as good as" RAW and that their CMOSs were so much better simply because they had 10+ years making digital cameras. None of it added up or made any sense. compete BS.

At the risk of being unpopular I have to say: i like the looks of this camera.
Does it have better features or price points than RED? No.
Doesn't have to make it bad. I look forward to shooting with it even if it isnt the future of cinematography.

lets face it if everyone was as ambitious as RED, there would be no need for Jim to form the company...this is expected. 8-bit S35 CMOS cameras were rumoured since the R1 came out.

Late? Jim, you're 6 years early.

I was just chatting to an award winning cinematographer about this thing.. Seems that the war against "Good enough" is just about to hit the trenches..

Sorry scratch that. 10-15 years. Can you imagine if the RED program had started in the 1980's or 90's. Where we would be now. Prolonged obsolescence has been the name of the game.

I think you are all forgetting about a certain company that has revolutionised the digital photographic market. Phase ONE.

I have owned their products now for over 6-7 years and they are leaps and bounds ahead of anyone in their game in digital photography.

I have been a DP just as long as i have been a commercial photographer and these guys make the best digital backs for still photography in the market.

I personally own a Phase One P-45+ back for my 20 year old Hassleblad and the pictures are second to none. Epic can't even compete at this level for digital photography.

Well my point is this... They are about to release a RAW version of the 2.5Inch square block that records RAW video.

Can anyone imagine a Hassleblad medium format camera recording RAW video?? This is just crazy!!!

Every REDUSER is talking about full frame 35mm! This format is almost 4 time the size!!!

Sony and Panasonic maybe dragging the chain but look out for PHASE ONE. They are by far the industry leader in photo and now they are looking at VIDEO!!!

The surprise for me is that other companies have never tried to deliver the future. It seems like they have given only what was necessary. If it appears that I am calling them out, I guess I am. Now that we are invested in this thing... I am now confident with what we have now and what we have in the bag for the future... we can do that. We have new stuff coming that will blow minds. It is only because we are looking forward... not "what is good enough".
