EPIC is possible because of REDCODE. Without it we would be shooting to refrigerator drives or some dopey RGB codec.

EPIC without SSD doesn't make sense. So do we have to pay about $2,000 more for Stage 2 package or is it to early to ask this question?
Too early... we are likely to price the SSD module the same as the CF module, but you'll need to buy some media. You don't have to if you want to shoot 5K @ 24fps to CF cards. But that is about all the CF cards can do. Up the frame rate and you are looking for trouble.

Jim, why are the SSD media so expensive? (It's not an accusation, just a question!) What is inside them? SLC or MLC? Is it a RAID system? How much MB/S do they have to deliver constantly?
And do you think the price will come down once they are mass produced for you?
Thank you,
Felix
I have several computers on SSD.
Work great. Fast and Zero faults.
That why is expensive.
Moore's law will kick in at some point I'm sure. We have priced them at what we think will happen, not what is now. That would be too expensive. The data rates in these SSDs is high. We have the exact same problem as with CF cards. Manufactures specs don't match real performance so we had to pay a premium for guaranteed performance. Deanan has been pulling the remaining hairs out of his head working on this. It amazes all of us how loose the memory guys are with specs. Our customers don't need to worry about it... we do. But I can say that this is no easy trick. Deanan has the MB/sec. specs.

Thank you, that is interesting to hear. Strange what these SSD manufacturers get away with. But would you say that you might certify certain thirdparty products for lower framerates/higher compression later on?
I know that you loath to give time frames, and understand why; but also hope that you understand that it would help us in planning.
Could you maybe say something along the lines of Epic #1.000/3.000 will in no way be ready before xx-xx/yy-yy and more likely be ready in zz-zz/aa-aa
Yes... just like we have with CF cards. The camera will analyze how fast the media is and let you know what you can get away with.
