Hi all. . .

. . . are we the only folks in REDland who earnestly desire a way to kill a bad take? Sometimes we'll run through as many as 10 to 20 takes on a particular shot, and we really only want a few of them. It would save TONS of drive space and a lot of hassle in editing if we just had a button we could hit that would delete a just-finished take.

Please?????? Can you have it????

Stephen

This discussion comes up every now and then. At some point RED decided that the possible dangers of such a feature were too big.

As far as redusers are concerned, it seems that those on bigger budget, multi-crew shoots would LOATHE such a feature, while those on low budgets and/or small/single crews would LOVE such a feature.

One reason for not having this feature is fragmentation of the media.

While we are requesting features, I would love an option to quickly browse through files. As it is now, when you are finished recording file #211, you have to click the << button 111 times to get to file #100. Would be great if in playback mode, the joystick could be used as a quick shuttler: left/right goes to the beginning of the previous/next file. Up/Down Skips 10 files ahead/back.

Also, pushing the >> button while playing the last file, should circle back to file #1.

I second that!

As to the browse feature, even HVX-200 does that...

LOL!
Martin, I feel a bit stigmatized by your segregation... -:)

But, really...
This was much more of an issue when we only had 8GB cards to shoot to...

along those same lines, the redmote could be used to "dial up" any shot you
want to playback in nonlinear fashion on epic.....hopefully.

I can understand the aversion to/problem with deleting in camera on multiple levels. However, I can't understand not having it in RCX. I'm scrubbing through a shoot I did for TV last week and I need to deliver 400+ shots to a customer out of 700+ shots of 2nd cam bRoll, and I have to go through, write down the clip ID, go into finder, and delete.

Tom has repeatedly asked for this - I'm with him in a big way. Both in camera and in RCX, give us a setting that says "allow delete clips" to appease the folks who don't like it - then allow us to KILL BAD TAKES. Please?

Despite being a "grumpy old man", I can clearly see a good reason for being able to delete files in post.

You DO have the option to mediamanage now, though.
Choosing the shots you want and in/out, put them in a bin and export to a new folder.

THEN you could kill the original folder.

It gives me a bit of stomcach ache to suggest this as I don't know how robust the "export 3rd" routine is yet, but it is possible...

Occams Razor Gunleik. The simplest answer to the question of deleting clips? Delete the clip.

I'm just not going to select the good takes and export as new R3d's. Most takes ARE good for my 2nd unit stuff. I'll just do the delete in finder thing, but man, its lame.

Most people in post especially editor knows that sometimes what production people think as a bad take can be consider good or even sometimes rescue the edit ! You will never know. Stu in his Rebel Guide book specifically mentioned this as well. I strongly suggest not to do it.

I personally disagree of the idea deleting the file from the camera, you can choose what you want to copy when you remove the media tho.

I second the idea of browsing files

The playback browsing functions on the RED are literally slower than rewinding tapes, which is very inconvenient when the director or DP want to see an earlier shot on set. Please figure out a way to make it easier because right now it is very tedious.

Rivai -

I agree. However, some takes are simply MISTAKES, not bad takes. Also, many of us shoot RED not in traditional hollywood style sets and organizations, but in EFP and doc situations where your rules no not apply. That's why its an OPTION. I know that the moving picture business means limited things to some, but there is a whole world of media production outside the traditional TV and Film production realm. And in that realm where I live, we need a dang delete option.

Could it be made a dual level menu item? In other words on a higher level menu you could enable or disable the option of having a delete option. That is the delete option could be available with an able/disable option for the delete option?

I know it sounds complicated when you write it out, but it's really simple. The delete option is not available UNLESS you enable it.

don't go down that road.... i'm very happy NO ONE can delete anything on camera.

- because to make sense it would have to be fairly easy to delete a clip - otherwise its just as fast doing it on a computer.
AND if its east/fast to delete ON CAMERA, its an easy mistake to make...

so it might be a hazzle not to be able to do it, but at least no one has ever deleted a clip on a RED camera so far...

- But being able to TAG a clip as good or NG could be awesome - especially on commercials when you do many takes...

...

Except when you in the middle of nowhere doing wildlife, running out of media space on a once in a lifetime shot, and left your computer back at basecamp to save weight ..., and in many other non-"narrative drama" situations.

Also "Delete LAST take" wouldn't cause media fragmentation, and might be a good compromise if that really is an issue.

Don't make it the default option in firmware - make it only multibutton enabled - have an option to only make it a one off momentary selection, as well as an option to be a persistant selection. Make an "are you sure" confirmation dialogue box mandatory.

Surely enough protection!!

And for the truly paranoid, even have TWO builds - the main one NOT having a delete take option, and the other that does - for those who really need/want a delete take option.

No need to write down the clip ID, in latest RCX you can control click on a clip in a bin and choose "Show in Folder" and it will reveal that particular file in the Finder...
