  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Focus....

Don't forget... we have a RED AF lens program. Our lenses are cinema grade with well controlled breathing. They also will cover FF35. 1st lens is the 24-75mm F2.8. There is a wide zoom and a long zoom to follow.

Do you have a price guesstimate for the first zoom?

Will tracking be available on other lenses, e.g. Canon/Nikon motorized lenses?

Will all lenses work, or will be like with the Birger that some lenses will be problematic?

With motors being completely different from lens to lens it might be a matter of finding lenses with good enough motors and writing individual code (tweaking code) to best utilize the machinery within each, so some development should be expected. Am I on track?

Some of the algorithms are tricky and we are working hard to get them right. We have to characterize each lens... a few are difficult. Obviously all the RED lenses will work perfectly because we designed them to do so...

So far, we have about 10 Canon and 10 Nikon lenses done. More work to do.

One big difference in the RED lenses, besides much less breathing, is the motors. They are better and faster. Our lenses will be bigger, but the difference will be clear.

We aren't ready... but we are getting there.

Looks like an iPhone photo to me (judging by the aspect ratio and graininess)... Jim only said it was a 'pocket camera', not a 'RED pocket camera'.

I did not even think that it was a RED pocket camera...

It was just a tease

It is NOT a RED pocket camera. And lenses will be added by firmware upgrades as we go. However, we won't ship cameras until we have a full compliment of lens options.

Remember that you can also ignore all the AF stuff and just use PL mount lenses.

and what are the second best lenses performing with the new focus system canon or nikon.. etc??

It depends on the focal lengths if you are being critical. There is a big step down from the RED lenses to the Canons and Nikons because they were not designed for motion. The breathing is an issue (as you already know). Both companies make great lenses for stills. Hard to tell them apart in most cases. Where we can see a difference on the lens projector, you probably couldn't tell in real shooting situations.

We do understand that many people already own one of these companies lenses (or both). We want to give our customers as many options as possible.

Hmm... to me the shot looks pretty noisy...
What settings and light were used?
(I'm not talking about the setup shot obviously! ;) )

So you guys have to write every new lens' characteristics/settings into the AF system software manually?

I wonder why Nikon/Canon don't have to do firmware updates for their own cameras when they release new lenses?

Actually, the shot is very clean considering the lighting. It was shot in the Bank, which is the same place as the "Fincher with 6 EPICs" was shot. There is no light in there. This pic of Fincher was taken by Mark Romanek in the same light. The floor is the giveaway.

AF is a great, very nice and attractive feature but for a cine work is pretty difficult to use

and also it's very hard to nail the focus in some of shooting situations especially at available light and low light

because camera with AF switched on is getting dizzy to choose the right light source in those situations even with the "selected focus points switched on".

Wide open has pretty tiny DOF and then camera and the lens both getting confused to nail the exact focus point in AF mode especially when a light source is changing fast.

Then MF works the best.

For example I shot yesterday one event on the beach and in some of the situations was difficult to nail the focus with AF

and then I was switching to MF and to get the shots in focus but it was too late to get originals that actually I wanted to have them in focus.

Have a look:

The AF lenses will cost more, and the lens program set a fast development pace since its early beginnings all the way to present day with seven RPPs and two RPZs. Will they be optically superior to RPs?

And is there a chance we might see the 24-75mm come out alongside EPIC?

SJ, did you get beat up by that guy the speedo? :)

Sanjin... please reserve judgment until you see what we have come up with. Imagine pointing to your subject on the LCD and having it snap (or roll) into focus. It is MUCH better, and more precise, than you might imagine. For the purist, MF is always an option. But you need to see this...

BTW... I'm staying up to give Europe some love. :-)
