  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Where the Hell is my 12 Core Mac Pro?

Yea and bootcamp can also be buggy.

My speculation is a decade of building computers from scratch, Macs, Hacks and PC's.
Hackintoshes are great for Joe Soap who want a cheap Mac, not for professionals who rely on them day on day to pay the bills.

BTW your W3680 is a 6-physical Core chip for 12 HT cores. We talk about physical cores here not HT cores. We want a DUAL 6 core server class solution. We already have 8 physical cores so your machine is a downgrade for most of us.

The term is "Logical Cores" of which it has 12 @ 4.3 GHz (24/7). Obviously you have not seen the benchmark score pictures I placed elsewhere in this topic.
Currently the most powerful unmodified Mac Pro is no longer a Mac Pro at all. It is a hackintosh.....and it is my hackintosh. Maybe you should take your frustrations out on Apple for not yet releasing their 2010 Mac Pro? I have absolutely nothing to do with that. LOL

I am a professional not unlike others in Los Angeles who rely daily on their computers to pay their bills. Just because I like emoticons does not make me un"professional". Your argument still does not hold any water.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing your rig, its sweet.
I'm just saying that for certain uses such as an ingest machine for DIT work or an edit/grade machine for client sessions, a hackintosh is just a little too risky. It has to work flawlessly 100% of the time. For everything else a stack of those machines makes great value for money and great performance. Assistant edit suits, non client supervised sessions, render nodes (Thats a big one)

I hear that all the time. People said what the Wright Brothers were doing was "too risky" as well. Compared to driving a car, the risk is nonexistant. Nobody has more hackintosh time than me in this country. Don't ask me how I that is, I can just tell you that IT is. A hackintosh is only as good as the person who put it together and when it done right with the right parts, is flawless. How do I know this? I can't say. All I can say is, to believe the hype, without actually seeing a hackintosh with your own eyes (day after day after month after year) is to believe anything anyone tells you as a fact without a ounce of firsthand knowledge to confirm it.

Mike, you're coming out of the gates a little hot and you're acting like you've got something to prove. Feel free to talk about your hackintosh, but do so without insulting the knowledge of experience of those around you. We understand that you are very proud of your computer. It's the evangelical nature of your comments that are problematic.

It's not like it's hard to build a Hackintosh... the information is laid out all over the net. Anyone who can read a grocery list properly can build the same thing...

And, yeah, from several years of running hacks in all sorts of situations ON SET ETC they can be awesome for the money. At any moment a software update could flub your entire install.

For some that's worth the risk, for others maybe it's not.

The problem with hackintosh and I'm sure its been mentioned is the fact that if it goes bust that's your problem and only your problem... no one to help you really and truly but the community and I'm sure many here when on a Job would like two methods of help rather then one.

Mac Pro maybe behind a Hackintosh but the support is there and that's what is paid for,
Don't get me wrong with the whole Hackintosh thing though, it's great stuff, it's been real fun using one but to be honest, I still love the fact that my Apple product has some sort of help when it's down and under, not that I don't trust the community but you guys probably get me :)

edit:
Mac Pro as the head and Hackintosh render nodes as pointed out earlier here is definitely a good way, I went Mac Mini and render nodes only cause my Mac Pro was elsewhere but still worked the same.

I think APPLE is going to license OSX for OEM sooner than later.

You know ... the ultimate "Microsoft" kinda move - and like I said .... they can just keep their iOS locked down and focus on making consumer products for the masses.

but Mark if they open it up then they will lose control of the platform and need to write drivers etc. or go a la Microsoft and get peeps to write drivers for the platform but in that way it's then up to the company to write the drivers,

we all know how much everyone likes to blame Apple for minor bits and pieces no matter how small so imagine a late driver or something like that,

not to mention, more open means more chances of more viruses etc. so there goes on of their selling points...

supporting someone elses stuff whilst selling and supporting their own would be difficult, asking someone else to support and sell their own stuff whilst selling their own creates confusion in the market to some extent, Steve did note that he was tired of the whole "educational mac" "cooperate mac" and just wanted one Mac to rule them all kind of.

It was said somewhere, I'll dig it up if needed but Google's a friend.

As always, it's just IMO, I think they'd be crazy to go open

The last time they licensed the Mac OS it was a gigantic failure, Considering you need a mac to program iOS apps I think Apple would rather have people make them on actual macintosh computers that they made instead of some cheap barebones bottom line mass produced Generic Box.

Tue, but back then, it was the PPC (Motorola) platform with NuBus IO. Everyone is now Intel based. So all accessories should play nicely.

Apple can preserve the 'Apple consumer experience' by continuing to R&D the cool computer stuff that the general population has come to expect and enjoy (mac mini, imac). But I wouldn't be against Apple OEM'ing with HP or Boxx for the 'Enterprise Level experience'. I would consider that approach No harm/No foul.
