  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

Too late in the game to add those to these though.

That's a bummer, but I'm hoping there will be enough time in the Tattoo program to react to things like this that are certainly going to pop up! :)

Another feature thought: add a mechanical lock switch to the unit to keep the mag in the camera while it's being used. It could be a completely user-operated thing, wouldn't need to be controlled by the camera's mounting/unmounting. Just something to engage to prevent the mag from accidentally getting pulled out/knocked out at the wrong time. Similar in concept to the magazine release mechanism on a film camera... it locks it in place.

A couple thoughts here: So the REDMAG really sticks out and is held in the ssd module slot only by friction? If it was flush you could easily tell if it was not seated all the way into the slot, and why not do what most cameras do and have an eject button and a door to keep the media and internals safe. I understand that there are not other cameras that record to standard 1.8" form factor media, but I would think with this larger solid state media, a door and eject/locking mechanism would be all the more important.

Also, if RED plans to strictly support only using RED REDMAG proprietary recording media in the SSD module (even if it internally contains commodity hardware that can be classified as SSD) and will not be releasing a driveless REDMAG tray for the enduser to supply their own SSD, I think it would be more appropriate for RED to officially refer to the now "SSD module" as the "REDMAG module" as that would be more accurate and avoid confusion.

Will RED release specs of the REDMAG media? It would be good to know what SSD they are using internally as that would reveal a lot to customers regarding expected performance of the REDMAG. There a couple good fast 1.8" ssd candidates, but not many and not anywhere close to the number of 2.5" on the market. The majority of the 1.8" SSDs on the market greatly underperform standard 2.5" SSDs since since 1.8" market is so small and few are released. If I'm going to buy into a $3250 (minimum) proprietary recording medium based around a $300 commodity computer hardware device. It would be great to know exactly what benefits and performance can be expected.

Of course some of these ideas are based around the idea that RED will not sell supply-your-own-drive REDMAG drive trays. What is the final word on that? It sounds unlikely given what they have stated but I'm not sure I have seen a definite answer from RED.

Depends on how you look at it. 126GB is what, about an hour of footage at RC50? What would Kodak charge you for 5000 feet of 35mm stock? And you can only use that once.

For EPIC user the price will not be an issues, I guess, but for many Scarlet users it definitively will - many user will require 3-4 SSDs! I assume the 1.8" REDMAG will support the highest REDCODE rate generated by EPIC, and such high write speeds are definitively not required by Scarlet users.

Therefore it would be nice with a cheaper, less speedy REDMAG SSD solution for Scarlet users, many of which are hobbyist on a limited budget - please

Currently Intel X18-M 1.8" 160GB (100 MB/s write) sell for 425 US$.

Cheers
Dan

If price is an issue, the 16GB RED CF cards are down to $300. If you need really long takes, the 640GB RED Drive is $900 and will record about 4 hours of 4K on a RED One. Hard to find a better GB to dollar ratio than that.

Good thought, Brook but if it can't get done, with all of those quarter twenty threaded inserts on top it will be very easy to make a right angle bracket that would both lock it in place and protect it from being bumped.

but REDMAG doesnt have a built-in raw stock/asa display :)

are you serious that the SSD drive just sits out of the camera... waiting to get pulled out or knocked out.... surely RED have thought of this and have a solution the secures the drive in the module... surely

My Bad ! Thought there was a 1.8 version !
May be worth contacting them and testing their products. May be a supplier for the future.

DIT Switch

DIT Switch

Not sure if this has been mentioned, But it would be great if the SSD had a easy red/green slider switch for the DIT world. I know a lot of the runners would really appreciate an easy switch which can visually notify weather the drive as been offloaded by the DAS. Then we can all stop using gaff Tape. Either way really excited for the release and Thank you for all your hard work!

Any chance there will be a left/right side version? I was thinking of the 3D scenario. The fiber module option is a work around.

I have the same question. More often than not, I think I would prefer it on the other side of the camera if I'm operating a very compact hand-held setup or have the grip handle on there Then again, for on the shoulder, it's probably best on the right, where it's shown.... It's hard to tell from the picture in this thread, but it looks like it could be annoying having that SSD sticking out right where my arm goes to grab that side handle.

I would love to see a 1.8" side module that we could swap for the side CF module too!
