  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

zeiss ZF lens - yes/no?

Well they say Messi is the new Maradona so much that it was clearly done on purpose... surely nobody would take offense but take it as a funny joke.

Now answer my questions! :angry2:

EDIT: just to be clear I am just trying to be funny. I do hope I can get some feedback on those questions please.

I will be posting some stills as well as clips shortly. We have a resort/spa marketing piece that we are shooting Oct 13-15. I'll cough up some footage soon after.

Thanks guys, looking forward to them!

I just noticed that the 100mm macro is twice as expensive as the 85mm. ouch!
It might be a little harder to justify getting the 100mm macro over the 85mm.

Does anyone have the 18mm yet?

Nice composition. So those were taken with a Red One?

I'd like to see a picture of them on a One now that you mentioned that.

Thanks - yep - those are frame grabs from the RED. I am in the process of taking pictures of the rig so I'll make sure to post some of them here for people to see.

Well I just too my time and read through the review of the 35mm 50mm and 85mm Super Speevs vs. the ZFs

MAN! Was I in luck.... just what I wanted to see.
It seems they are PLENTY good enough for me and all I have to worry about is the very reason why I was considering getting a set of Super Speeds rented for this project. I would love to be able to play with them with a follow focus to see how easy or hard it would be for the AC...

I think I saw Nils say that some of the ZFs have almost a full turn?

Some of the ZFs - the 25, and the makro 50 and 100 - have almost 360 degree focus throw. (So I doubt the Superspeeds can be "much longer") The 35 and 85 have shorter focus throw, but still much better than Nikkor lenses.

Ok, here is the post... that's a bummer cause I am interested in the 28mm that you guys said was especially nice... plus it fits nicely into the line up I am considering (18, 28, 50, 100). The 100mm would be the shallower DoF and more $$$, so it is nice to know that it would also offer longer throw besides the macro capability... that makes it worth it's price quite a bit more. But the 50mm is twice the price... I guess that's also worth the money, but it is a shame that they are both macros, I really wouldn't need both to be macros... but I guess that's how you get the longer focus throws, you probably get the better mechanics from the very fact that they are macro lenses...?

I have tried calling RPlenses several times now but can't find them. The phone just stops ringing after a few rings. If I can get a hold of them I am sure the'll be able to give me the lowdown in one easy phone-call.

So far, the set would be about $6,000 just for the lenses (haven't shopped around much) which is significantly more than the $4,780 for the different set pictured on the RPlenses site. But I would suspect that the 28mm also has longer throw otherwise you could chose the 18mm, 25mm, 50mm macro, 100mm macro which would also compliment each other very nicely and as far as I know right now the three longer lenses would have long throws...

This must be quite the bargain considering the cost and full price rental of Super Speeds! However if we get the off-season discount from Cinequipt we'd get all Super Speeds for six weeks for about $2,500 less...

A long throw (and macro) set of four ZFs has to rent quite nicely though in the era of 35mm adapters with Nikon mounts and Red Ones with Nikon mounts... the only other difference is the aperture ring with hard stops. WAIT, was that what you guys were talking about modifying?!?

Hmmm... my head hurts. Any thoughts from better working brains?

It was! Wow... so the additional speed and a little it longer throw, obviously better feel, would be the only major differences between a modified set of ZFs and Super Speeds...?!

Now I am going to cry if I can't swing this. And I haven't figured out how the heck to do it yet.

:waaa:

Yes, The RED ONE 18-85mm

or

Nikon f2.8 17-35mm, zeiss f2 28mm + f1.8 50mm + f1.8 85mm + f2 100mm macro and Nikon f2.8 80-200mm

The Red zoom wouldn't get here in time, and would be a few thousand more and would be one big mutha for our support gear. Good point though... it would only be a little further up the cost line and the optics would be better, constant f-stop... countless lengths... different beast but man oh man... that would be one sweet baby to own. It is going to take us a long time to get used to it's existence... there was NOTHING like it in this $$$ range. Thanks for the refresher.

Now the list of zooms and primes would cost just about the same as the Red zoom and would take care of the weight issue.

You just made my head hurt MORE not less! :pinch:

Thanks for the post though. Must keep a good perspective...

The aperture ring stops are removed at RP Lens and they are as smooth as the focus. When you look at the price and determine the value, compare each lens to a comparable Cine lens and the ZF's look like a great deal. Some lenses are more expensive than others but all in all they are a great deal, new, with warranty. I Likey!

Wait, so RP offers warranty? I ask because of the de-clinking process must void the warranty for Zeiss.

Still trying to get through to them.

About the comparison... the only problem is that with the 18-85mm things just got more complicated. Before that beast got released (25 of them shipped or are shipping out now!) things were much more simple... I was just begining to fully realize thanks to this and the other comparison thread. But now your ZF prime sets that include the more expensive versions are closer in price to the zoom.

I still haven't figured out which particular ones you need to get for the long focus throws so I can't really gauge how close or far you are from the zoom.

Then again you get more speed with the primes... however, that zoom might just out perform the primes at 2.9f...

Can one of you DPs just tell me what I want? Isn't that your job? :)

lol.....lol.....I thought the same thing, and I own the primes.

Warranty is one year with RP

Here's a few quick'n'dirty shots I took today. I'll be taking more "pro" shots with simple shaded background sometime soon. The lenses in these shots are Zeiss ZF 100, 85, 50, 35 and 25 - in that order. Don't have the 18 - yet :shifty:

Wow, that looks like it really must be a pain to change aperture in the 50! :)

Tlorenzo, I am sorry, but can you figure out the angle of focus throw? Pretty please!

And thanks for taking the time to shoot and post the pictures. They loop purty!
