  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

zeiss ZF lens - yes/no?

Matthew-

Any chance that you'd sell the rings separately? (I already have the lenses...)

Since sending lenses back and forth is not my preferable way, I would prefer to assemble it my self, and since you have made them for the zeiss zf lenses already, wouldn't it be easier to just send pre-assembled parts to the lens owner.
Thanks

Not trying to be a butinski here, but I would think the general procedure would be to mic the lens to insure proper fit before cutting the gear.
Then heating the gear to expand the opening allowing for a proper snug fit.
And then making sure the gear is seated true.

I have had gears cut for a good number of lenses. And while shipping a set of lenses off is not at the top of most peoples list of fun things to do, it is the best way to insure a proper fit.

Good Luck!

I recently ordered a set from RP LENS. Zeiss 18, 25, 35, 50, 85, and a Nikkor 135 all to be converted. We ordered the Viewfactor Wireless follow focus which doesn't care which way the focus ring turns. After looking at the Zeiss tests, it seemed like a simple decision. I will say that my camera is for our use only and not a rental package, so why worry about what mount is on the glass.....as long as they produce clean images, I'm happy.

By the way, Peter at www.RPLENS.com has been a true professional to work with and I'm certain that we will do more business with him in the future.

Question for folks who are using these lenses... Being a full-frame coverage lens, the 18mm gives about a cine-equivalent 35mm FOV, correct? What are people using for wide angle?

EDIT: Brain fart. I'm surprised nobody corrected me on this. FOV is dependent on sensor size, therefore the 18mm will give the same FOV as a cine lens on the Red. (It will, however, give a different FOV than a full-frame digital/analog still camera - by a factor of something like 1.6x... so roughly 30mm.)

Zeiss make a beautiful 15mm f/2.8 i Leica M mount
. I'm hoping they will make a ZF version of that, some time.

Until then, I have the Nikon 14mm f/2.8. It's alright, but the bulging front element is not my matte box's favorite.

So what are the equivalent FOVs for the full set?
And can we get some pictures of the lenses and more frame grabs?

Also, how would you compare the focus throw to something like Zeiss Super Speeds?

So what are the equivalent FOVs for the full set?

Equivalent to what?
The 18mm ZF will give the same FOV on RED as any 18mm cine lens.
If you want to compare to full frame photography, the factor is approx 1.6.

There is no difference in the FOV. They are what they are.

Here's a pic of my set. 18, 25, 35, 50, 85, 135. I'm very pleased with them and surprised at just how smooth they are. I also bought the 8mm Peleng fisheye, and ordered it with the Nikon mount as well. Shy of the mount not being a PL....they are very hard to complain about.

Seems like many people happy on using this for RED, how's the image quality of these ZF compare to the cine Zeiss big brother master/ultra prime and all? I noticed the same T* coating.

Any more pictures, Haskell ?

thanks
José

Oh! Ok... I must have misunderstood... I was worried. Good to know that these are S35 lenses then cause that's what I thought they were!
:)

Let me ask then how would you compare the focus throw and action to something like the Zeiss Super Speeds... I know it is an unfair comparison given the prices. But I have heard wonders of the focus action and feel... also I think I remember that the throw is noticeably longer than that of Nikon primes. So I would love to hear a bit from someone that has used both.

More pictures Haskell... pictures are always fun. :) Let's see the whole set and let's see them from the front too.

Nikon ZF and Zeiss Superspeeds are like apples to oranges. Superspeeds are a consistent T1.3 and have a much longer focus throw. Optically, they are similar in some respects. Nothing beats a superspeed though.

Some of the ZFs - the 25, and the makro 50 and 100 - have almost 360 degree focus throw. (So I doubt the Superspeeds can be "much longer") The 35 and 85 have shorter focus throw, but still much better than Nikkor lenses.

wow... 360 degrees would be plenty!

rgdfilms I know they are completely different beasts, but speed aside, I am asking just in terms of focus pulling. And of course you can't shoot a whole movie at 1.3f, at least not without getting stabbed to death in your sleep by your 1st AC :)

I am interested in finding out (they are closed) how much a set from fully modified RP would cost with the 18mm, 28mm, 50mm, 85mm. It would be a very versatile set and it would cost about the same as renting a full set of Super Speeds for a feature.

I am looking at renting from Cinequipt.com this winter to shoot in northern Minnesota and if they are not out and the season is slow I would get them for 6 weeks for $3,600.- and they would be the 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm, 85mm primes (all 1.3f of course). But the 18mm, 28mm, 50mm and 85mm lengths would be almost just as good!

We would be shooting it on an HPX-170 at 1080p 4:2:2 with an SGpro or SGblade... so chances are the added softness from the adapter and lower resolution would deem most or at least a lot of the added sharpness from the Super Speeds useless as it wouldn't get recorded...

...and we would have them for re-shoots, pre-production tests, and they would be SWEET to have period... I suspect they rent quite nicely too!
I am looking at getting a Scarlet, not a Red... but they must also hold their value VERY well...

What do you guys think?

Nils, the "hand of god" was Maradona not Messi... :)

That 100mm macro looks nice... I would love to see a full resolution full size frame grab or still of say a penny using the macro capabilities. Maybe the most versatile 4 piece set would be the 18, 28, 50, 100?

Wow, I apologize for this. The posters in the film were designed by me, but the sports people at TV 2 wrote the texts. :)
