I've always wondered why the 28mm is so much larger/longer than the 24 or 32mm standard? Does it have a floating element or close focus optimizations?

Thanks for your question. The 20mm, 28mm, 40mm & 180mm were later developments than the other T2.1 primes. One of the weak links in the original 16-85mm series was the 32mm Planar, which is a very old design that just barely covers Academy aperture. It is not a very well corrected lens for flair, chromatic aberration or distortion, to say nothing of poor field illumination across the frame.

My own belief is that the 28mm was designed to provide a moderately wide lens with better performance than the 32mm. It in fact does contain a "floating" group and is mechanically unlike any other T2.1 prime. It has a lot of elements and is noticeably heavier than the others. It is the most highly corrected W/A T2.1 lens for color fidelity and geometric distortion. It also has excellent illumination across the frame, even in the corners. It probably suffers least from focus shifts from stop to stop. It's a corker of a lens.

I have the 28 and 40, and both perform very well. Although I will probably sell them when the RED primes become available.

You may want to sell them before Red primes come out. Remember 5 years ago you could barely give them away, the highly inflated prices could evapourate overnight.
