  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Supreme Prime series

I didn't think the breathing was a deal breaker at all. Much less than the Sigma Cine's which few take issue with, Ultra Primes (or even Primo's), or pretty much any anamorphic but certainly more than say Masters or Summilux-C's. For me it was only really noticeable on the closer end of the focus scale.
The vignette also isn't as bad as my first tests showed (turns out my janky Petroff mattebox was causing much of it). It's still there, but well within the limits of what's correctable (especially with XD data?), and I even kinda like it. Of course I can foresee a few situations where it might be a bit of a problem, but it's very common to add some vignette in post anyway and I find it more organic, "real" or "imperfect"? when it happens in the lens.

TBH the thing that bugged me the most originally was the "cats eye bokeh*" but I've come to the conclusion that not only is that something Ive seen on any fast full frame/vv lens (maybe less-so on the Tokinas with their lager coverage, haven't seen/used them), but I've come to like it as well. I feel it adds some dimensionality or a 3D-like impression, kinda creates a semi-spherical plane that draws your eye in. *(bokeh is perfectly round in centre of frame, progressively more football-shaped towards towards the edges, tilting in the corners. One of my test frames demonstrated this well)

Of course I'm biased AF because I own both a Monstro and a set of this glass... (I'm lens-poor, heh).

Hoping to get my set back from the rental house over the holidays and play some more, might go shoot some wolves at a nearby sanctuary.

Overview and Benefits - eXtended Data Masterclass

In this episode our Product Manager Christophe will introduce you to the benefits of ZEISS eXtended data. Currently ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 XD and ZEISS Supreme Primes are supporting this lens data technology based on Cooke/i protocol.
The accurate information about focal length, focusing distance, T-stop and depth-of-field on the frame enables the camera assistant to work more precisely and eliminates speculation for the DIT. The ZEISS specific distortion and vignetting data makes shooting grids redundant and accelerates compositing and stitching in post-production.
In this episode, you will also learn which accessories can record eXtended data."

3M “Stick, Re stick”

Directed by Darcy PrenderghAST @ OH YEAH WOW
Shot on Alexa SXT and Zeiss Supreme Primes

Bought a 35mm single and received it from Duclos yesterday. Planning on shooting a little stress test this weekend.

First reactions: The supremes are a nice evolution of form factor and build quality, closer in weight/size to ultras but pulling in some of the performance advantages of masters. The new helical focus is very smooth although not as smooth as the masters cam focus. There is a small rubber collar below the 95mm front to protect the lens from clamp on matte boxes. The graduated iris is really nice.

I'm not really seeing the vintage influenced look that Zeiss has advertised, very clean, sharp, contrasty and Zeiss throughout. Different look than masters, the bokeh feels rounder and has that cats eye look as it approaches the ends of the frame. I can see that the focal plane rolls out smoother than masters. They don't feel warmer or more cooke-ish than my other Zeiss lenses which was a small worry for me, they should cut into masters, ultras just fine. T1.5 feels very clean to my eye, cleaner than the masters T1.3 which shows some CA. Pleasant flaring, definitely differing than the masters near lack of flaring, nice middle ground. Breathing on my 35mm is subtle, not really a concern of mine.

You mean the Masters show some CA at T1.3?

I would love to see a direct comparison (real world test) of Zeiss Supreme Primes vs. the Tokina Cinema Vista Primes. Everything I have researched so far says the Tokina CVP are optically superior to the Zeiss SP from breathing, image circle size, to CA. The exception being that the supreme primes are smaller and lighter weight. So aside from the good name Zeiss, why would one pay double to 3/4 more for a lens? I realize there is no perfect lens and that some of its in the eye of the beholder. Just interested in the thoughts of others on this...

Jamie,

I don't own either, but until someone who does post a comparison video, here's the best I can do with two separate videos.
