  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Supreme Prime series

Alex,

You can just post some .R3D frames if you didn't want to go through the time and trouble of uploading and posting the entire .R3d clips.

Ok, wasn't sure if a frame would be as useful. Here's a link to a few frames:

Went out with my brother who's a VFX artist (one of the 50+ people who spent a month removing Henry Cahill's moustache). He's real interested in what he can do with the XD Data. (I used the latest beta build which records XD)
I went out looking for geometry, flare, bokeh, breathing and skin (in darker, higher contrast) but we kinda got sidetracked and shot a little chase sequence (that I won't include). So I intend to go out again some time real soon.

Thanks a lot Alex! The .R3D's would be better, But also much more time consuming to upload. I just thought it would easier on you to just post the .R3D frames instead.

Alex,

Here are the frames graded in Redcine-X

Here's a few more from a couple weeks ago when i first got the set. CU of myself on the 35mm (which had faulty XD and had to be sent back) with and without a 1/4 hollywood black magic. And a shot of the Supremes from the 50mm (Supreme-ception?) which shows some pretty wild stuff in terms of falloff/separation (look at the bottom left of the 29mm and where the iris ring meets the rest of the body of the lens, on either side and the lens support foot).

At 2:33 he talks about Red's firmware 7.1 and it working with the lens data from these lenses.

Glad you guys are having fun. Thanks Aaron, it really is a lovely combo. I have till the 35mm gets back from Zeiss before these babies go off to live at the rental shop (week or two?), so let me know if there's anything specific you folks would like to see. Supreme vs Contax would be pretty interesting but annoying (and time consuming) because of lens mount swaps. If I had access to a studio I would consider taking the time to do that properly, could be pretty useful.

These look great. Any chance you can shoot a few at f4. f.11 I'm about to pull the trigger on a set and just want to know how they old up closed down. Also I noticed a little vignetting on the 50mm from these stills.

Yeah they all vignette at 8k FF, especially WFO and on the closer end of the focus scale. More noticeable in that shot on the 50m because of the even and higher overall brightness. At 8kHD or WS it's just a lovely bit of character. Gets better as you close down, gone by 4-5.6. Yeah I can do some stuff closed down, @4-5.6 the "cats eye bokeh" also cleans up quite a bit, (I also don't mind that. From what i can tell, all fast FF/VV lenses do it and I feel it adds to the dimensionality/3D-like effect) More of the same at T4-11 or some daylight ext?

Alex,

Some Day exterior scenes would be great! I don't know about everyone else but I'm kinda worn out from digging around in the dark in all the Low Light / Night test footage.

Nice lenses.

Thanks for the real-world examples.

Yeah a Contax vs Supremes would be great.

Alex are you ever in NYC?

My team could help with that if you're ever in town.

To be really honest might be just my lack of perception but I download the R3D file, and compared it to a similar image I had from my Leica-R and honestly I couldn't tell the difference at all. Also my Leica-R does not Vignette!

I'm still a little perturbed that the Zeiss reps continuing say they're a little "warmer". My subjective opinion would have been to kept them the same as a Master or Ultra Prime, but then again I haven't used them so I cannot tell if they're lying just for marketing appeal since Cookes are all I see on set these days.

"The large image circle of the Supremes along with the Vistavision size sensor of the Monstro allowed us to capture all the beauty of longer lenses but with a wider field of view. We could be closer to the actors without missing out on the production design elements. The Supremes have excellent colour rendition and an aesthetic and smooth focus fall-off."
