  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Supreme Prime series

Eric,

Kind of feel the same way. Maybe because I am just so use to the S35 image look and I'm just still not sophisticated enough to appreciate the "full frame" look. I also think that if the lens were stopped down a little more that it would look a little better.

I got my Supreme's a couple weeks ago and so far i'm pretty smitten. Haven't had too much time for testing as I was on a web-series, but I would say they have a lot more character than I was expecting from Zeiss. Smoothness/creaminess, warmth, some veiling and sort of a whispiness/cloudiness in some flares I've seen. Honestly, the draw sort of reminds me of my Contax Zeiss set, albeit more contrasty (and less flare crazy). Like Contax's stopped down a bit but with much better mechanics, CA, sharpness, geometry, breathing and bokeh (16 Blades!). They're beautiful, but they do vignette a bit on Monstro or Alexa LF (which i like but not everyone will, "correctable with XD data") and they breathe a bit on the close end (not nearly as bad as the Sigma's). So far the 50mm and 29mm are my favourite. Gonna shoot some test stuff this weekend and can probably post some images here.

Zeiss Supreme Primes Go Full-Frame with the Sony VENICE (Lens Test)

Michael,

Yeah, it seems it was pointed more toward him with the 25mm and more toward the camera with the 29mm. Maybe they realized that the placement of the fresnel in the 25mm scene wasn't giving an accurate representation of the flare handling capabilities on the lenses, they possibly corrected themselves in the 29mm scene foward.

"DoP Balazs Bolygo, BSC, HSC shot this short film exclusively on the SONY VENICE with ZEISS Supreme Prime Lenses directed by Simon Smyth.

A short film about conflicting emotions. The film demonstrates the extraordinary properties and values within the Sony CineAlta VENICE recording to X-OCN ST. This version is the "broadcast SDR grade".

Supreme Test

Supreme Test

Hey Michael and Rand,

I shot this test very quickly in Boston when getting ready for another job. Realized the angel of the Fresnel wasn't right after swapping lenses.

Thanks for clarifying... tests are tricky! I only spotted as I know the lenses quite well ;-)

What did you think of the lenses?

Patrick,

Thanks alot for chiming in on this, great test by the way. I learned much more than I knew before of the characteristics of the Supreme Primes from how they look wide open to stopped down to F/8.

I think they have a lot going for them with the Full-Frame trend ramping up.

Sharp, Nice Focus roll-off and less clinical than some other sharp Zeiss glass :)

Wanted to put them up against the Arri Signatures but haven't had time.

Patrick,

I've always loved the look of Zeiss lenses, from the Contax/ Zeiss AE and MM to the Zeiss ZF and ZF.2. I never had a chance to use any of their cinema lens conterparts, however, ever Movie I ever liked the looks of used either Zeiss Superspeeds, Ultra Primes or Master Primes. Now the Supreme Primes will carry on that "Zeiss Look" into the future with Full Frame.

just my opinion here but, aside from the city wide sequence at the end and the shot after the credits i saw nothing here i liked at all. Im gonna say its more the DP and how the footage was treated than the lenses/camera though. Was very videoy overall in the look aside from some nice dynamic range in a few shots. I hate talking bad about other work and usually just don't say anything but i feel this doesn't do the lenses or camera any favors and I've had a few beers...

The flare from the supreme primes is very Contax-like. And remember Contax Zeiss were always full frame.

Jake,

I just think it's everyone getting used to the Full Frame aesthetics, lens selection, aperture selection and maybe framing. I don't know at what resolution the video was shot and how it was manipulated in post, but I would tend to agree with you on that.

Most of the DP's out there know S35 like the back of their hands, but Full Frame/Full Frame +/Vista Vision, whatever you want to call it, is going to take a little time for most to perfect and learn how to derive the best out of.

I loved The Contax Zeiss lenses. I was one of those fanatics who always had to have a late serial numbered German MM, No AE would do. My favorites were the 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4 and the Planar 100mm f2. I had gone through at least 8 or more copies of each till I had a German MM in "Mint Condition" of each from "matsuiyastore" on Ebay.

hmmm, I have all the matching focal lengths between my Supremes and Contax's... (I also got a few of mine from Matsuiyastore but they're mostly MMJ.) What's the best way to share r3d's? Got some from last night/early morning I can share if ya'll want.
