Does anyone know if Zeiss has plans to add longer focal lengths to their CP.2 lineup? I know the 100mm will be available soon, but any word if there'll be longer lenses in the future?

I read a rumor about some over-100-under-200mm ZE/ZF/Zwhatever lenses coming by 2012. Presumably such lenses would get the CP treatment.

Can't remember where or how long ago or if it was an at all reputable source. But FWIW...

I heard they are making a 135mm later this year. I'm wishing that they revamp the 18mm and 21mm,25mm. The 18mm at T3.9 is way too slow

What? The 21 is awesome. I agree about the 18 being too slow and the 25 (and 35) being crap, but the 21 is awesome.

I'm interested in this observation, since I'm considering a Zeiss prime set (either CP or ZF). What are the differences you observe between the 21 and 35?

What do you think of the 50 and 85 ?

Well my experience is with the ZF/ZE lenses, not the CPs, and Zeiss claims they're made to "higher mechanical standards." I bet that just means tighter tolerances on focus/DoF markings and not better glass, but I can't be sure.

The 21 is gloriously sharp, the only wide angle lens I've ever seen better than the 14-24.

I shouldn't have called the 35 crap (although the 28 is. Horrible.), it's very good, comparable to Nikon's new 35 1.4. But not in the same league as the 21 which is something special. Not a bad lens but not worth the "Zeiss premium."

Depends which 50 you mean.

My feelings on the 50 1.4 are about the same as on the 35 2. Not horrible but nothing special. It's worse than Nikon's new 50 1.4 and better than Nikon's old 50 1.4 (and Canon's current 50 1.4). Interestingly note that the max f-stop on the CP version has been changed from 1.4 to 2, perhaps to address it being unimpressive at 1.4.

The 50 2 Macro is frakkin amazing. Only 50 I've used that's as good is the old manual focus (and with an aperture ring!!) Nikon 50 1.2.

The 85 isn't nearly as weak as the 28 but it is not impressive. Better than Nikon's old 85 1.4 which was garbage, not from the same frakkin PLANET as Nikon's mind-blowingly-awesome new 85 1.4.

The only lenses from this series I'd want are the 21, 50 2, and 100 2. Unfortunately, the new 50 1.4 and 85 1.4 Nikons I mentioned lack aperture rings :(

I agree with most of this, but I have to disagree with the comment about the nikkor 85. I did a direct comparison between the Zeiss ZF 85 1.4 and the Nikkor AIS 85 1.4 and sent the Zeiss back. Both seemed plenty sharp on the Red One (at least from 2.0) but the Nikkor had a much prettier look--nicer bokeh, and a nicer transition from sharp to out of focus, and it focussed significantly closer. of course it's an aesthetic call, so YMMV.

The "old" 85 I was talking about was the 1.4 AF-D which I believe is a totally unrelated design to the AI-s (aka not the same optical formula with an AF motor added like many AF-D models).

I've never tried the AI-s but based on your take I definitely need to! Thanks for the tip!
