Hi

I have just purchased an almost full set of ZEISS CP lenses, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm Macro, 85mm and 100mm. I am going to buy the 18,21 and 25mm once ZEISS make the T2.1 versions.

I mainly shoot steady cam and I am looking at buying the Arri LMB 15 3 stage clamp on matt box.

My question is with a Zeiss CP2 18mm lens could i run 3, 4x4 filters in the matt box without seeing them in the frame? I have heaps of 4x4 filters and i am trying to avoid buying more glass.

Maybe I can use my 4x4 ND's and 4x4 grad's and run a 5x5 tru pol?

I really dont want to re buy all my filters in 5x5.

Has anyone tried this?

Hi Adam,

For portable, lightweight Matteboxes with clamping option I think many
would recommend the new OConnor O-Box. I think Abel might have just
got some in stock:

http://www.abelcine.com/store/OConnor-O-Box-WM-Mattebox-System/

It takes 4 x4 has some other cool features and is probably also cheaper
than the Arri.

Not sure if I totally understand your question, but just wanted to let
you know this one might be worth considering ...

Hi Anthony

What i am asking is can i put 3, 4x4 filters on an ARRI LMB 15 3 stage matt box clamp mounted on an 18mm Zeiss compact prime? I thought you might just start to see the edge of the filter in the frame.

Im trying to avoid buying 4x4.56 filters or 5x5 filters. But if i have to i would rather go to 5x5 filters

It is a question of "with what size sensor?" On a RED One it should be no problem. Same on an EPIC S-35 at the largest 5K mode. But on a FF35 sometime in the future I think you'll likely vignette with 3x 4x4 filters on that 18mm.

Hi Shane,

I've been told a couple of times by the Arri reps that they plan to release faster versions of their shorter focal lengths.

I never succeeded in getting any schedule information however.

Cheers,

Steve

i have been told from Arri Australia that the 2.1 versions will be out next year so I am planning on hiring wide angle ultra primes. T3.9 on the 18mm is ridiculous! Who wants to change lighting setups when changing lenses!

Hey mitch if i bought an LMB 15 and had the closest stage as 4x4, then 5x5 for the other two would this work? I have heaps of 4x4s (grads, etc) but i dont mind having to buy a new set of ND's and a new tru pol. I believe I dont need to IR cut filter anymore with RED MX Is this correct?

If indeed Zeiss is making T2.1 18,21 & 25mm CP lenses for next year do not expect them to cover full frame 35 cameras. The current CP formulas are taken form the ZF/Contax still lenses which were designed for full frame. The T2.1 wides will most likely be taken from the Standard speed line (some of my favorites BTW) and have only S35mm coverage.

i wonder if they will make faster wides in the ZF series

Would be nice if they did, but I don't see how they can and still keep the FF coverage as well as the compact size. If they keep both those aspects, then something else has to give -- such as thinner, cheaper housings and mechanics or fewer elements == more distortion and breathing, etc..

If you don't need the FF coverage and prefer a consistent large aperture, take a look at the Ultra Primes. Sure, they're double the cost, and even more on the really wide end, but they're T1.9 from 14mm on up. The 12mm and 10mm are T2, 2.1 respectively and the 8r is T2.8.

Also, the RPP's are T1.8... Even at 8mm. Yeah, it's a big, heavy monster lens for an 18mm, but it makes some pretty pictures.

Hi Jeff,

Thinking about all this...

Considering the release dates are always pure speculations...

and considering the RPPs are (for me) WAY too heavy...

Maybe use Compact Primes from 28mm to 85mm and buy a Ultra Prime or standard speed as wide angle.

Just a thought.

I have to be honest and tell you that I have never seen anyone ever use a 5x5 filter in an LMB-5 or LMB-15. I know ARRI makes the tray (they make a 5.65x5.65 tray as well), but at least in my market it is never done. I do see plenty of people use 4x5.65 filters. Perhaps you might want to consider this size. Also, if you want to use a polarizer in an LMB-15, note that the trays do not rotate. So you would need some form of Rota-Pol tray with a gear wheel on top. Lucky for you we sell these in a variety of sizes. ;-)

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Mitch, that's great news. The f3.6 on the 18mm CP2 is what keeps me from buying the set. I'm about to buy a set of RPPs but might hold off if there is a good light weight alternative on the horizon.

Nothing immediate mind you, but options are on the way. And there's always the Ruby 14-24 T2.8. It's sharp as a tack and will cut brilliantly with the CP.2 lenses. And it covers FF35. Abel can sell you one of these today.

Hey Mitch

Where can i find information about the ROTA tray for the LMB15? I dont mind buying 5.65x5.65 filters Im trying to avoid buying 2 sets of grads IE horizontial and vertical ones, thats why I'm trying to stick to square filters.

On another note I have been told if i buy the RED Schneider filter kit that I dont need to use the IR filter on the RED MX. Is this correct?

And Im not fussed if the matt box is ARRI or not I just need one to suit the CP'2 range that can clamp on with 3 stages, so If there is a croziel or something of a good quality that can clamp on, my back (STEADICAM OP!) would appreciate it. AS LONG AS IT IS LIGHT!!!!!

Adam, we use an LMB-15 with 114mm back on the CP2 set all the time. I can check clearance on the 18mm on Monday with regards to your 4x4 concept, but it might be time to invest in some PV (4x5.65) filters as they will future-proof that mattebox for you.

Vertical grads in the LMB-15 will be exceedingly difficult if you're much wider than 50mm as it would mean putting the mattebox sideways (unless you want the grad exactly centre). Have you considered the MMB-1 with its side-loading tray?

Mitch, I am trying to get a 5.65x5.65 tray out of Arri (they sent us the one for the MB-14 instead) as we own a set of grads in that size due to already having an MB-20 - not many other reasons to get one though, certainly not for regular NDs.
