  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Your First Red Shoot

With the first Red delivery schedule I was looking at getting my camera in the fall so I had a project in mind to film... but seeing as how my locations would be under several feet of snow by November I'm gonna take a pass on that.

There are two other projects that would both be shot entirely on sets so they could be a go if I can wrangle up the funds. One would be a feature set in 2050 with a group of people trying to transport nuclear fuel through a Vancouver that is buried under several hundred meters of glacial ice... the other would take place in 2008 on board the first civilian space mission to rendezvous with an earth grazing asteroid.

Barring that, I'll be trying to schedule a late spring shoot for the original feature I had planned on.

can you imagine porn in 4k???

that will put you off your lunch in a hurry.

I have a friend who works on all the m.night shamalan movies and am going to
try to get him to test with me. m.night is a really down to earth guy an hopefully will have the time.

if not that, scenics of the city of brotherly love.

or porn.

Umm, if you say so. I've heard he's one of the most arrogant directors around, the guy thought he could act in his last movie, which was one of the biggest disasters imaginable, and his movies keep getting worse with every entry. I think the guy is unbearable personally. I don't think there's many people in Hollywood I hate more than M. Night Shyamalan, I have no respect for the guy. He makes one great movie and thinks he's the best show in town, and has the right to criticize other great filmmakers publicly without basis. I've heard nothing but bad things about him.

But, of course, you have personal experience to back up what you've "heard" to justify publicly bashing a man that many would consider to be a coworker or a friend... yes?

I've heard this from other professionals in person, yes, whether they were just jealous or something, who knows, but I have no trouble bashing someone with that big of an ego. I appreciate some of his work, too, I like both Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, but I think the guy's ego has shot out of control with Lady in the Water. I shouldn't say I hate the dude, I mean maybe he's a cool guy if you get to know him, but some of the comments he has made have really rubbed me the wrong way and are unacceptable from a guy who has vastly less talent than the people he is criticizing in public. It's one thing to say something about another filmmaker to a friend, or to a few guys you know, etc., but when the media asks you about something and you deliberately burn a fellow filmmaker who is about 100 times more talented than you are, that's pretty low to me.

JLB, What does that have to do with testing a camera? No one asked for personality assessments. Back on topic please.

Yeah, I at least try to meet someone for myself before I make such harsh statements. Anyway, let's see if I can steer this back on topic.

I still plan to shoot just about anything I can point the camera at initially. I had a concept for a short, but it's turning into more of a feature and I'm going to go for it as soon as I can get all the pieces together. I have the location and September/October of 2008 look promising for that. I'll probably do a couple shorts and shoot for stock and anything else I can think of in the mean time. Oh, and my typical corporate type stuff. I can't wait to see how RED performs for my next shareholder report video. I may just hold onto the HVX for that stuff...

Acehole -- simple. He shouldn't be allowed to test the camera, or for that matter ever even hold it, because he's unworthy of something so great as the RED. ;)

2008 is going to be a great year for independent filmmaking, for sure, it seems like from reading this thread and others that many, many people here have features planned, and I'm guessing most are in the low-budget category of $500,000 or less, sometimes even ultra-low-budget like $50,000 or less. I know that's where I stand. My first film will be with my own funds, something that is not recommendable in this market, but I feel that filmmaking is a lot like poker in the sense that you should never be gambling more than you are comfortable with losing. I know I won't lose all $50,000, because worst case scenario I put the darn thing on DVD for $1.29 per packaged DVD (replication is so inexpensive now days) and then sell it at genre conventions, online, etc. Worst case scenario I'd probably lose a good chunk of my time and maybe $30,000, and if that is what happened, eh, was worth the risk. But I feel that won't be the case.

I'll be jumping into my first feature. Of the seven feature scripts I've written to date, none are low-budget enough for what I can afford to produce myself, so I'm writing a comedy set in a few rooms that will be the first one out the door. I was hoping to knock out a feature before the end of the year on my PD170, for practice, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of time and money to produce a product on an inferior medium. So the first flick may be a bit shaky, but I pick things up fairly quickly. And I'll definitely have a pro DP on the project. Any Hollywood-based pros available for a gig in early 2008?
