Hey guys, do you guys have any good examples of great low key lighting that you have noticed either on features or shorts anywhere?

If we're talking on shot on Red, Cronenweth has some great low key and soft material in both Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Jeff Cronenweth, ASC is the man! Much respect for his work. If fact, I would say I prefer his work using Red than any other DP behind a Red camera.

Awesome recommendation guys, If you guys know of any behind the scenes or tutorials on how to do low key lighting, send them over.

There is a scene beautifully lit by James Merifield in the “Deep Blue Sea” of Rachel Wiesz and Harry Hadden-Paton standing in a dark alley way. They are back light by a practical at the end of the alley. Their contours are defined by the rims motivated by the practical, but otherwise their flesh tones fall off to complete shadows. It just goes o show, as long as you define the contours of your subject with subtle underexposed edges, you don’t need to be afraid to let your talent fall off into black.
