  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Your advice

If you don't need it now, wait to see what develops with the Epic. Looks like end of the year is a possibility. If you need a camera now, RED One M-X is plenty capable of shooting amazing footage.

What Kaya says...

You'll learn a lot more from owning than renting. Actually depends on what your ultimate goal is. But there's no reason not to buy a secondhand upgradeable RED these days. I'd maybe hold my breath a bit on buying a new one, as it doesn't come with the Epic Upgrade option.

But that's just me...

I say get a R-1 or wait for a Scarlet. Even when Epics become available for sale there will still potentially be a waiting list because RED doesn't yet and likely will not know when the time comes for opening up the camera sales worldwide, what the demand will be. They may try to make enough to exactly meet demand and miss the mark. But if you buy a Scarlet Brain you can use that with the modules you buy and then when they become available, upgrade to a new or used Epic Brain. On the other hand, Epics could be on the shelves about the same time as Scarlets, so it's a gamble.

That leaves the No-Brainer thing and just buying a R-1, either used with MX, or new and in line for MX.

If none of these work for you, try going into an induced coma and wake up in about 8 to 10 months and see where things stand.

You also need to take into account that Epic is a much more expensive camera than the R1. Probably around twice the price when you factor in the necessary modules.
