  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys,

Had a issue on set the other day when using the Dragon 6k, hoping someone can shed some light on this!

Shortly after rolling the record icon would turn yellow without me stopping recording or doing anything to the camera, I did some research and found out that yellow means a clip is finalizing. I had to ask the director to stop the interview while I addressed the issue and actually had to hard shut down the camera in order to get it to stop, hitting the record button wouldn't do anything. I thought it might be a write speed issue so I turned down the compression options to 6.1 from 8 and changed card but was still getting the same problem.

When I tried to review the footage I kept getting a "clip error" message. Luckily after transferring the footage onto the computer it seems ok but have lost a few clips.

Anyone else experienced an issue like this? I have been using this camera for a little under a year and have not come across this before.

Hard to know, but sounds like that is a well used media card potentially near end of life. There's very technical ways to check that, but likely not worth the bother. You might be able to recover the footage though. Might be worth reaching out to RED to see if there's any insight. If this is a DSMC2 body there might be a direction to a checkup or service too.
 
Thanks Phil, I think it must be a camera issue as it happened to every card I had expect one - I'm going to try resetting some settings and see what happens.
 
I had some problem with audio buffer overload error and it would stop recording. I never tackled it. But it happened when using 4 audio tracks.
 
hmmm ya still having issues here, I have completely reset and wiped the settings of the camera and have done a full secure format on each card and I am still getting the same problem, and the point that it turns yellow and locks up changes every time.... super frustrating because sometimes it looks like it isn't going to do it then psych! it changes lol :(

As its an older dragon it doesn't look like RED services them anymore. Does anyone have any leads for anyone who services older cameras in Canada?

Hey guys, so here is an updated in case anyone comes across this in the future.

RED support asked me to send them a LOG file from the camera so they could see what was happening internally. They noticed errors in the writing to card portion of the LOG and suggested I did a health check to see if it was a card issue, they recommended some software, I downloaded it and ran a diagnostic on each card with no luck, all cards reported 100% health.

Went back to RED and their next step was to check the mag module by renting another one from a gear house and testing it - luckily the rental house in town also had a faulty Dragon X with a working mag module, they let me test it. It was however the mini mag version and ours was the older full sized mag, did some research and the mini mag apparently worked on the X so tried it but the same error was occurring...

So I messaged RED again and they suggested "re flashing" the firmware, I did this and HAZZAH! it fixed the issue, I filled a card 3 times at different bit rates and formats and it worked just fine.

So there you have it! A lot of back and forth but they solved the issue for me, now just to purchase a mini mag module, and cards.... and a card reader.... f$$$$k! hahah.

Does anyone have any leads to where to buy a mini mag module other thank eBay? the rental house has offered to sell us there's but I am just looking at options.
