  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wow - New Australia "Come Walkabout" Ad

He was paid an obscene amount of money to do it; and they shot it during photography of "Australia", so I don't believe the budget was entirely justified.

It's a beautiful TVC, but as one of the 20 million+ investors, I'm not very happy with the money spent.

Inddeed. Well over $200m was blown on the film and the government would not even contribute $50k to produce nature wildlife films that arguably have much higher viewing rate overseas and far greater effect on promoting Australia.

Nicole Kidman and Baz Luhrmann do not need hundreds of millions of taxpayer's money to put food on the table or even make films. I find it obscene :ranting2:

Haha... you Aussies think you have it bad? We've got a government that is throwing away trillions of dollars... and we don't even get a fancy commercial out of it.

Amazing ad. I was in goosebumps the first time i saw it.

BUT ,what the ad fails to mention is that Kate subsequently perished in the 122 degree heat of the remote outback. The coroners report revealed 36 venomous bites to the eye and face from flying spiders.

Question, what the fark are they doing that far into the desert alone?

Please, those visiting aus, DO NOT GO "WALKABOUT" or get "Lost" in any way. You wont fucking make it.

Is that what they meant when they said, "She departed as Kate"? What a bad example to choose for an ad for walkabouts.

The video looks good, though.

In terms of structure it's actually similar to the Chanel Advert shot by the same director: Woman with responsibility in the big city needs to escape, has an escape, finds her true self and can now return. (Note even the opening shot is similar).

This was the first thing I was thinking about when they showed them in the"Outback". Australia has some pretty dangerous animals...not always the ones you can easily see.

Nice looking spot though.

I don't know, I usually don't feel the need to voice my disagreement with others, safe in the strength of my beliefs and respectful of the passion of others, especially people like Tom, with high visual aesthetic values but...

This is a nice looking add, but what the ...? This is one of those sumptuous looking (presumptuous is more like it) things that seem to thrill tons of people that just totally, absolutely escape. I mean, if this is the best a highly rated director with all means at his disposal can come up with after being given millions to produce something, then, once again, just give me a break. What, we've never seen people jumping into lakes in slow motion or enjoyed helicopter shots inside canyons or seen amazing vistas of the Australian (or any other) wilderness, or were fed the anything-but-original story of the city dweller finding herself back in the wild??? Holy mother of God, everything in that add is so not fresh or original, or more importantly, truly heartfelt, that none of the nice (though nowhere near unique) visuals can make up for it. Then again, I didn't think The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, so go figure...

Sorry Tom, you're a true artist, no disrespect intended...

The problem I have with this campaign is that it is built around a negative. So, your life is so shithouse you need to escape - don't top yourself (or your wifey!) or go postal, just come 'walkabout'. Seriously, this is one totally messed up campaign.

Australia's most successful tourism campaign is still the old Paul Hogan 'shrimp (we call them prawns actually) on the barbie'. It was based around positives - great people, beautiful environment etc. And it worked well - extremely well.

I personally think Baz's spots look great - but the underlying concept sucks. And the blame for this must be taken by the Australian Tourism Commission and DDB Worldwide (their ad agency). They greenlit the concept regardless of whether Baz came up with it in the first place.

But I think Paul Hogan summed it up best:

(from: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24568660-2702,00.html)

"If I go to your house to visit and I want to come back, it's because I enjoyed your company, not the furniture. They (the ads) are addressing the furniture."

"(Other nations) like to think they've got this vague image of us, that we're friendly, happy-go-lucky, fearless, wonderful people," Hogan said. "And we can tell that lie again."

Then again, I didn't think The Dark Knight was a masterpiece, so go figure...

In your defense most people who think The Dark Knight was a masterpiece can't seem to find a point to anything other than Heath's performance in the movie.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one who walked out thinking stuff like "Wow I really loved Harvey dent's story and that thing about Alfred and the jungle guy? Powerful stuff"

I also liked the bit where the criminal threw the trigger out the window...

I like the fact that they were willing to smash IMAX cameras using them in car chases! :greedy:

Caution to the wind and all that!

beautiful ad! .... I just thought it was extremely depressing, ha! "nothing going right in your life? mask your depression with a trip to australia!!!"

then again, now whenever i'm feeling down, I'm like "hey I should go to australia and go swim in a lake somewhere with a beautiful aussie girl" hehe

if depression is as beautiful as the ad....then I never want to be happy again!

damn whats with all the negative comments? - that was a fantastic ad! extremely well directed and stunningly photographed!

-- Aussies are allowed to complain about their money spent:)

Actually, I don't think there are too many Aussies who think that this campaign is really the right way to go. And this comes off the back of the hugely unsuccessful "where the bloody hell are you?" campaign so forgive us for being jaded.

I just don't think selling Australia as a destination based on a negative campaign is going to be successful. Given the abundance of natural attractions that we are blessed with, I feel we don't need to go with a concept that suggests your (ie the audience) shitfull life will be made so much better by a visit down under.

They have budgeted nearly $50mill on this campaign and I bet the ad guys think that it's a great (cocaine will do that!). We have been able to generate successful campaigns based around the positive aspects of visiting Australia in the past, so why try an approach that starts off negatively? That's what I don't get and why I think it will fail (at a time we can least afford it - tourism is a huge business in this country and our biggest employer).

Just wondering if anybody in the US has actually been 'inspired' enough to holiday here based on the premise of these ads or even by seeing the movie 'Australia'?
