  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wow - New Australia "Come Walkabout" Ad

I'm one of Bruce Hunts main rivals. Competitors if you will.
We pitch against each other on a lot of work.
We are both in the pointy end of high end TVC directing and one thing Id love to do is professionally bag him, but I can't. His work on this tourism AD is exceptional. It's a brilliant ad, well directed, well shot, well cast.

Top marks to him and his DP.

very jealous.

Well, it wasn't shot on Red, but that would've been interesting.... it was 35mm.
Bruce Hunt directed the spot(s), Mandy Walker DOP. I think Baz's title was Creative Director. They were made while "Australia" was in its final stages of Post.
It's 1 of 2 versions made, that one's "New York", there's also an Asian version with different actors, but similar storyline.

Interesting comments, good to hear the wide variety of opinions on it which reflects some of the discussions I heard during production..... then again, any discussion means it's had some impact ;-P

I'm sure the lacklustre Aussie $ would have helped Tourism and the campaign, if only the world didn't happen to fall apart at the same time.

And not a mention of the redback on the dunny seat anywhere :-)

The movie... Christ.. I guess I haven't watched such a poor one in years... Even from a technical standpoint. Can anyone explain how the hell it ever ended up on any screen in any part of the world... Who lost control and when ?

yes i havent watched it yet , i should have gone to the cinema but i was put off by such an Audacious title and a load of mixed reviews. Baz lumen is one of Australias more accomplished film directors and would have had every backing to make this film possible. Seems to be an epic "gone with the wind" type film, something your mother might enjoy perhaps :)
 
Rudi, I definitely understand your comments about this commercial being derivative. It certainly is. In fact, I could post some screenshots from films that are mirror images of this TVC. But, considering that 99% of TV spots are useless junk, this spot does stand out. It has very high, cinematic production values. At least here in the states, on television, a spot like this stands head and shoulders above the rest.

Then again, I love the Geico gecko spots, so there is no accounting for my tastes! :)
 
I was a bit surprised Mandy Walker wasn't nominated for a cinematography Oscar for "Australia" - would that have been the first female Oscar nominee?? "Australia" isn't my cup of tea as a film but it does look stunning, as does the tourism ad...and the Chanel ad).

Australia.. is frekin awesome.. seriously.. if that was an ad to promote aus. as a "heeellloooow my leeetal fweeeind - come to awoosturaaalia" that was one efed up of an ad.

what they should've done is.. wanna try some kangaroo meat? they are cheaper than chicken and taste way better. why not lay on our beaches.. why not see the awesome sydney view. why not go on a safe safari and enjoy the outback. why not buy a holden while ure at it :p

but seriously.. that was one weeeeeeeeeirddddddd addddddddd.

i was watching this stand-up comedy by some dude.. I think it was lewis black.. hilarious guy. "I love these Ads.. I love EM!.. cause some of em are mystery stories..big and boldly produced and you have no idea what the fuck they are advertising... 3 rabbits are sitting on a log.. one goes home and hangs himself.. BUY A BIKE!"

hahaha.

guys just go to frekkin australia.. its amazing. gold coast.. ahh i miss it.
