  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

wow, 4k just got a boost.

It is simply staggering that you could do such a piece and not mention Red. Others are dragged kicking and screaming to the party and then claim to have organised it.

Thats just not right at all......almost parasitic

im being cheeky btw

It's important to note that they seem to be focusing on the projection side of the filmmaking process here in which case they didn't really need to go out of their way to say "Oh and it was shot in 4k thanks to the Red digital cinema camera, not a Sony camera"

LOLLL !!!

"5 years ago there was no 4K at all" !

No worries tho, everyone in the industry knows who started 4K. The only one that they lie to is Sony themselves.

And it's 5K worlds now...sorry Sony, it's not new

5 years ago was 2006, I think Red One came out the following year there may have been 4k scanning done back then but it was rare and expensive.
Red didn't "Start 4k" either I don't even think they were the first 4k camera, they were simply the first viable 4k camera which in some ways is more important then being first but still.
They are talking about cinema as well not cameras.

its kind of funny how they make it seem like a sony "invention".

To be honest if Sony didn't have 4K projector in that time RED couldn't show all the beauty of their 4K acquisition.

Also RED didn't invented 4K CMOS sensor, Jim bought it from somebody who was titled like a "Mysterium".

What RED did itself is something like an invention of REDCODE RAW or R3D (invented by Graeme Nattress).

It's the key or crucial component in that whole 4K (hi)story just because many other camera vendors can make or get their hands on 4K+++ CMOS sensors

but you have to get image in a sort of usable data package (data speed stream, compression, etc,...) to make it work.

For example Canon C300 has 4K CMOS sensor but can record HD image only (but a gorgeous HD anyway),...

Although some upcoming 4K digital cameras will work with uncompressed (Aaton Penelope Delta that use Dalsa 4K CCD sensor)

but also don't forget that the first digital 4K camera Dalsa Origin that also stored uncompressed data was terminated by Dalsa in 2008.

Yes, they do. Dalsa, Sony, and various film scanner manufacturers, including Thomson, Cintel, and Filmlight. With at least some of those scanners using sensors designed and built by Kodak.

If one is going to talk about industry history, one should try to get the facts right.

Agreed; knowing an accurate history is a critical component to self-development and information sharing, but don't forget for one second that the people who invent something are not automatically the authority on it (even if they claim to be).

I've been the first at a lot of things, but the race to do something first is far less interesting than the race to do something the best. Thankfully, there are many examples of this being the case, and I'm confident we can all think of some. -Dalsa's impact on the industry grows dimmer and dimmer as the years go on while RED's impact has widened into markets where the word "Dalsa" has never been spoken.

But in the subject of 4K acquisition, it is true that RED was not the first 4K camera, but it is the best. -And that title has been essentially unchallenged for just over 4 years. That's a historical fact.

For those people interested in the subject of technical workflow, here's an interview I just did on the 4K DI of "GDT" for Creative Cow. If you don't have time to read the entire interview, I highly recommend reading the section in the middle about high resolution framing. I am a huge fan of this concept and to demonstrate it better, we put the GDT framing chart online so people could see how the concept works.

No worries Rob, Jim doesn't care hum gets the credit, what matters to RED is that 4k is pushed forward full force and adopted globally by the industry, both commercially and at Home... ;)

Red Team and Jim derserves the credit for 4K Technology...what others are doing is unfair ...support the fair-play...

There are two aspects to 4K - creation and consumption. While RED is undoubtedly at the forefront of the creation side, one that is most relevant to us, it is Sony that is playing a dominant role in bringing 4K to consumers. Theaters - Sony 4K projectors are everywhere. Homes - Sony is the leading founder of the Blu-ray Disc Association and have pushed for a QHD/4K spec codec, which is in the works and coming to Blu-rays in the near future. Let's not underestimate Sony - they have found their way into hundreds of millions of households around the world. If any entity has the power move the world to 4K, it is Sony. Of course, in addition, the likes of LG and Samsung have to make 4K display panels feasible.

TQ Mike. Which is exactly why Sony is wrong ! Why said 5 years ago there was no 4k at all. Sony making it like they are inventing the 4k part. Kodak built the underlying the technology just like u said. While Red is the guy who keep pushing 4k to the edge.

What sony 4k camera before red ?

The only point i agree is they are pushing the 4k Projection, yes thanks to Sony..

The marketing folk choose to trumpet the achievements of their company and ignore others.

Sounds like SOP to me.

Is it irritating that many people in the industry will assume that the story they are being told is all they need to know? Yep.

I guess we will have to console ourselves with moral righteousness, ummm, delicious.

Craig. RED is the first 4K "Digital" Camera. If you can point to me the first 4k digital camera before red, i will took back my words.

There is only film back then that goes thru 4k scanning. Red is the first who started 4k digital camera and that's a fact.

4k system has been around before red of course, everyone knows that. Can we say we have been enjoying 4k before red, because film projector resolve 4k resolution very well with 35mm ?

Peace
