  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

wow, 4k just got a boost.

TQ Stephen and Sanjin. Lesson learned on this 4K history !

Dalsa never really took off because of its huge size.

They did make another camera, the Dalsa Evolution that was sort of the size of an Alexa/R1MX, but it was too late and too expensive. R1 had already hit the market.

R1 KILLED IT :)))

When he said that the film would be distributed in 4k, I'm assuming he means just to theaters? I mean I've heard rumors of 4k Blu-Ray...

Agreed; knowing an accurate history is a critical component to self-development and information sharing, but don't forget for one second that the people who invent something are not automatically the authority on it (even if they claim to be).

I've been the first at a lot of things, but the race to do something first is far less interesting than the race to do something the best. Thankfully, there are many examples of this being the case, and I'm confident we can all think of some. -Dalsa's impact on the industry grows dimmer and dimmer as the years go on while RED's impact has widened into markets where the word "Dalsa" has never been spoken.

But in the subject of 4K acquisition, it is true that RED was not the first 4K camera, but it is the best...

The statement I responded to said nothing about "the best" or impact on the industry. It simply said that "everyone knows who started 4K." I wasn't responding in the context of a contest, I was responding in the context of historical fact. I agree that Red brought the first practical 4K camera at a much lower price point. The doesn't mean that Red "started 4K." They didn't. And just because Dalsa's impact grows dimmer doesn't mean they didn't create the first digital 4K camera. They did. And it also doesn't mean that 4K as a format was not already in use by film scanners, because it was. Nor does it mean that 4K projection - developed and commercialized by Sony - is any less significant a component than digital cameras. It's not.

Red deserves (and gets) an awful lot of credit for pushing things forward in this area. But they didn't invent it, and when someone implies that they did, I think it warrants a response. In the name of historical accuracy.

Sony Pictures distributes the film in UK as well as in almost every country, there are Sony logos on all the banners on press-conferences etc. So it's natural that they're trying to promote themselves as "harbingers of 4K", using the movie they financed. Also my guess is that the film is projected with Sony 4K projectors.

The latest rumors that Canon with 1DX, Nikon with 4D and Sony Alpha with the next FF35mm already have planned to implement HDMI 1.4a or even HDMI 1.4b in their upcoming FF35mm DSLRs

that means it could be a real possibility to get 4K uncompressed out of it using HDMI to HD-SDI convert to feed existing recorders à la Codex, Astro, etc,...

Then we'll see soon what is a true rumor anyway,...
