I don't understand paying for a forum... And I personally think it's kind of ridiculous for there to be an "Epic pro" section or whatever it is.

Yes, there was a flood of new users when the Scarlet came out, asking the most ridiculous questions and making the most ridiculous polls, but what did you expect? A revolutionary affordable camera came out and people are excited.

Let us not forget Scarlet owners who are truly knowledgeable and provide a good amount of information to the forum. Phil Holand and Gavin Greenwalt, to name a couple.

I might be the only one, but I think this is extremely silly...

Thanks Michael.

As a Red Shooter and somewhat recent owner of the Scarlet X, I believe that Reduser has become an indispensable tool for people looking for information on how to shoot with, achieve high quality results, and even learn about post production workflows. This benefits Red owners, shooters, and renters today as well as future aspiring owners/operators. It's also entirely useful for cinematographers in general as professionals share and discuss their thoughts on process and technique. Rather opening and for free mind you.

There has been a recent "burst" of "nonsense" due to Scarlet X and it's popularity and tangibility. Many questions are asked over and over again. The search function is often under utilized. Even worse, stickies at the top of sections where new members even post a question are often not read that have the answer on the first page. It can get frustrating for sure.

In an effort to clear up confusion I find it best to answer or link to something useful if you have the ability and kindness to do so. You never know who's asking those questions. They could be a future coworker or employer. I've both worked with and for some of the members of this forum. On top of that you could be helping an aspiring filmmaker along the jagged and dangerous path that lays ahead of them. That was all of us at one point or another wasn't it?

I totally agree, Michael! And there's even non owners as far as I know, who have valuable information to share. There's been a time where not so many shooters actually OWNED their top gear.

I do miss the days though where reduser was a buzzing place of information. Lots of people left or rarely post or discuss anymore. There was a time where it felt like every second thread was one like Phil's skull thread.
And even back then some of the posts were useless. So maybe there should be some sort of restriction as in being able to read all the posts, but just not be able to post for some time in the beginning phase (at least in some threads or forums) or not being able to create new threads as soon as you're a member. I would assume this could help filter out a lot of noise.

for example there could be a newbie forum, where everyone gets to post from the get go, and if anyone else likes to contribute there, they can feel free to do so.
but in other parts of reduser, there could be a restriction where not everyone gets to post right away, but is still able to read everything so they can still post their questions about something from other threads in the newbie section. After a certain amount of time or post spent on reduser, these restrictions get lifted.

Though I still don't know if this is any good.

Just think about Joseph! Our model reduser. Look at where he is now. This would not have happened this way, if reduser were completely locked up. At least that's what I believe!
And you know what, elitism can kiss my a**. Just because I don't own an EPIC (yet) doesn't mean I can't help out others, contribute effectively, and also ask silly questions if I feel like it, because I missed something, or don't have enough knowledge in certain areas. I teach students and feel like I don't know shit sometimes, but that doesn't make me a bad educator.

Also I do use the search function a lot, but just sometimes that still doesn't help. or is a pita until you find what you were looking for.

Suggested paid membership wouldn't help.

...either. » Quote of this discussion and 'nuff said :-)

Just saw the other related funny thread.

Seeing Reduser start in Jan. 2007 and evolve over the years as an open community...spreading as Red became more popular...to reaching a phase where paying to participate or limiting access and participation is considered as a solution to noise caused by too much popularity...

...is entertaining.

In case the entertaining part was a subjective perception layer over a "community beneficial direction",
I'll try to offer few solutions, adapting to the same type of seen logic:

1) I suggest weekly interviews with mohawk high-tech specialists on a 1M people-per-month site writing about chocolate printers and potable toilet water;
2) New pissing match with Canon. This time in the sub $2K range.

To help managing the forum and ensuring highest level of S/N ratio, I suggest the following options:

1) Proof of purchase of Red camera required for membership - as forum benefited accordingly since Jan. 2007;
2) Forum privileges and sub-forum level access based on the amount of $ spent - guaranteeing merit of the posts - as seen since Jan 2007;
3) Epic Gold model;
4) Epic Gold sub-forum with fresh updates by Epic Gold users - which dramatically increases the S/N ratio.

I see the desire to turn this into a paid membership type forum as a symptom of some kind of disease; sad, really; It's the same line of thought held by those who feel that Red charges to little for the cameras, because it makes it too easily obtainable for those who they feel don't deserve to have them.
...I just don't what's going on with some of you...just my 2 cents

If they give the Forum less love... Then the place falls in chaos.

Does not really worry me now the more I think about it. I'm slowly drifting away anyway....

Probably a good thing.

Noooooooooooooooooooo! Don't goooooooooooo!!! Its so great to have you around here Mark. Your practical down to earth no nonsense comments are inspiring and very helpful. And IF you are drifting away, THANK YOU for your generosity in sharing. It sure helped me A LOT. Thx.

THe old reduser was Jim posting a couple times a week with the latest and greatest developments and ideas. Now, it's rare because of competition and all the whiners.

That's what I want back.

It doesn't help that RED doesn't announce anything before its release.

"OLD REDUSER" to me means 'wildly guessing what is going to be released when'. Seeing as RED has actually released products it's less hypothetical conversations and more practical nitty gritty questions like "When should I blackshade".

If it was like the old REDUser we would get a new RED Ray update every couple months along with some WIP shots of everything and a constant barrage of missed release dates. ;)

better moderation in both directions -- that's all !

True.

In the real PRO world, people stare their eyes with untrusty look on me only if (and because) I say I am a loyal RED supporter (from day one BTW).

RU is seen outside as a place for fanatics. This is not good for the image of the brand. Neither for who does business with RED products.

An inner-restricted-club would put all of us to look like members of a sort of masonic lodge.
Too much stupid to fit a step forward.

RED needs to keep going its own way in order to be a major ref in the industry, not the opposite.

To me and just for the record (take a glance on the stats), this forum is already a name everywhere. Do you know anything similar in the industry with such tremendous success?
I don't.

Please don't do shit. Thanks.

There is no problem apparently, just might makes right elitest contrivance of convenience, versus social benefit (red user society). If somebody asks, answer, otherwise don't look at it. The true worth of red user will be known by how many answer (correctly). As far as information structure, what is needed is a library for searching, not a mishmash of information. You are barking uo the wring tree if you expect search to cure, search is half useless often (less useless is the correct answer in detail the first page, not 12 pages, or twelve pages of bits and pieces of information because nobody is bothered to answer correctly. Answering correctly saves a hundred times the time in searching at times.

Noisy people may sit there and demand to lesser mortals, that they know without them answering, but that is nit community.

There is a lot of "noise" here too, have seen it before, have been the one answering all the questions to newbies. But noise is not order, like tge infirmatiin structure proposed before, and what Patrick also said, it is what is the mishmash elitest system being advocated instead for convience of some. It is well worth Red paying somebody specifically to make such an information structure, and combining all the help resources here. Unless you make finding the answers easier than posting than what do you expect, you are barking up the wrong tree, it is far from that easy.

The suggestion of posting a link to answer a question, is a good one, but that means one has to look it up to post it in the first place, an information structure would help you do that quickly as well.
