  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Would you like/prefer/beg for more time to upgrade your Scarlet-D to Epic?

I received my upgraded EPIC-DRAGON yesterday and I have some thoughts:

I own an EPIC-DRAGON – wow.
Really, wow.

It took me almost exactly one year to the day to get here. Without having taken the initial leap into the RED ecosystem with the SCARLET-DRAGON, I wouldn't have seen the growth in business that allowed me to plop down the $ to upgrade to EPIC. To think what is possible now is exciting and inspiring. I have a job next week that will benefit hugely from what EPIC can do.

I was quite vocal about the timeframe which was stated for SCARLET to EPIC upgrades, and I was reacting solely on emotion and frustration – which is virtually always a bad idea. Once I saw that it was in fact possible to pull together to funds to make the upgrade, I became laser-focused on making it happen. It was a huge motivator, in fact.

Looking at the invoice for the EPIC, the line item says "SCARLET DRAGON® to EPIC-X RED DRAGON® Upgrade Credit – $14,5000", which is what I paid for the brain a year ago. I am certainly not the first person to praise this model, but my initial investment saw ZERO DEPRECIATION in RED's eyes. I used the pants off that thing and they effectively handed me my money back. You could argue that I was able to "try on" the SCARLET with no penalty for wanting to move up the food chain. They will sell my SCARLET at BT pricing at a loss. Yes, they did get the full $24k out of me for the EPIC brain; it was in two steps, but in the end I wound up where I wanted to be from the beginning but couldn't afford it.

I know the other upgrade paths may have their own complications and people are reacting to them in a multitude of ways. I'm only speaking to my own experience.

Thanks to the entire RED team for opening up this upgrade path for the short time you did. I did grumble about said timeframe, but my camera needs are covered off for the better part of a decade and that's amazing.

Happy shooting!

+1 Bill.

RED allowed us to basically rip them off. That creates one of 2 responses from customers:
1) gratefulness for such a trade-in deal at that value
or
2) a feeling of entitlement from customers who think every future deal should be this sweet and don't ever look at it from the company's POV.

I'll go with #1.
