Also how does one fit the nikon mount to the red, do you have to remove the PL mount? Or does it mount into it? Thanks!

It will work but only manual focus (as all lenses on red). you have to remove the pl mount in order to put the nikon mount. it's rather easy but not for the field or during the shooting day in my opinion.
I would recommend you to look at these, manual focus in nikon is mach more smooth and accurate when operated manually than the plastic autofocus

If you need a faster lens in this range I recommend the 24mm f2 AIS which is wonderful.
