  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Worthy competitor for the EPIC??

How are they doing 8K RAW? Can anyone explain what type of sensor this is, the megapixel count, etc?

Arri will have a hard time explaining why HD will be good enough in 2013. Clever move by Sony to have a consumer-ish model at a moderate entry price point, most likely hurting Canon 300 quite a bit. But this will still be only 2K, unless externally recorded at extra $.$$$, while compared to Scarlet it will be expensive. The F55 is certainly aimed at people with TV backgrounds, who will just trust the brand, as Arri is being trusted by people with movie backgrounds. Neither F55 nor Alexa (at 2K) are reasonably priced in comparison to RED.
That's a little hard to say given the F55 hasn't even been priced yet... lol

Sony can't even explain it... Because it's not an 8K sensor without counting some of the pixels more than once. ;) And yes, that is really what they do! With the diagonal pixel arrangement, they are literally counting some lines/rows of pixels more than once due to the overlap. The sensor is a 6K sensor, when you get down to the nitty gritty details and harsh reality of it all.

New Sony now "Modular"

New Sony offering FREE UPGRADES

Thanks RED!!!

Does it get more flattering than that? Great new specs... Sony definitely paying attention... but I have complete confidence that RED will leap frog again next year.

Regarding the price from Phillip Bloom's website, he quotes it as being 50K (USD?):

"On paper, the F55 is an Epic beater. Yep…I love the Epic, amazing camera, but again on paper these out performs that camera in every way and I have been told list price on the F55 will be around $50k body only so not cheap, raw module probably another $10k….F5 I am told list price of $18k. Also the 4K on the this will only be via Sony module and won’t work on 3rd party ones…Even with these prices, two very different prices for different markets….war truly has been waged. With a global shutter, that sensitivity and that price, coupled with the reliability and backup of a company like Sony. Red are going to be in serious trouble. Please ignore by previous Red issues. I have no ill feelings towards red. None at all. i adore there cameras and if I hadn’t blown all my money I got when I returned my Epic on drugs and hookers (again joke!!!) then I would possibly have dipped my foot into it again. But now? No chance. I want an F55. I want it now. Give it to me now or I will scream and scream until I am sick!!!!"

How does a 8192x2160 sensor produce RAW 8K??

Dude... it's at 45degrees, man. It's science.

It's that the green, to blue and red pixel ratios are different. With regular debayer it's something like 1/2 green pixel for every 1/4 blue pixel and 1/4 red pixel. Sony claim that they go 1 green for every 1/2 blue and 1/2 red. Or something... Just don't ask questions; it's science bro, you wouldn't understand.

Seriously though, looking at the images the F65 poops out, it's definitely doing something right. Whatever (il)logic it is, it definitely supersamples better than any other cameras I've seen (including Epic?), has a boatload of highlight recovery, and low-light capability.

The sensor on F55 and F5 is not the same as F65

your right, it's a 4k sensor as opposed to 8K. Which is one of the ways they keep their costs down.

You think the ovaltine battery tech can be applied to REDvolts? Is it proprietary, or are Sony just the first to use it?

metal and made by Cooke exclusively for Sony. They actually have a look very close to S4's. It will be interesting to see pricing.

Would love to know where you're getting your information, it being so totally wrong and all.

Sony is perfectly capable of manufacturing its own lenses. Certainly turning to Cooke would not be their first choice. Cooke is tiny in comparison to Sony's lens manufacturing capabilities, and even compared to the companies in Japan with whom they already have other partnership deals. Did you know Fujinon (among several others) does a considerable amount of OEM work for other companies? Fuji has numerous optics factories, each of which outscale Cooke's operations. I have absolutely nothing against Cooke, but that company is quite well-occupied making its own product and it would not make sense on several levels for Sony to subcontract this work to them.

of course they are capable, but they were capable on the last effort as well. Like I said in the other thread I am only repeating what I was told. I was told the new lenses were "secretly" made by Cooke for Sony. So either he was misinformed or it really is a "secret" (even though he told us).

I´m curious to know it that viewfinder is included in the price. I remember a few years back when the color viewfinder for the XDCAM PMW700 camera came out it cost was/is aboout 8500.00 GBP ($13000?). Wonder what the price of this one is

Does anyone know the exact bitrates of this new XAVC codec?
I understand it's capable of 8bit, 10bit and 12bit coding, with 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4.
The 10bit 4:2:2 is most interesting to me.
