  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Worthy competitor for the EPIC??

Considering how hard Sony are pushing 4K and that nearly every 4K projector is currently made by Sony... You do have to wonder.

Sony is to 4K projection what RED is to 4K capture. It is a symbiotic relationship and RED users should be a little less snide about Sony, just because they have a different way of doing business.

Except the 4K Red Laser Projector is targeting their stranglehold even more so than the cameras. THIS RED PROJECTOR is the real game changer imho. I saw it and I want 2 NOW~

I like my Sony XBR TV though and my PS3 and PS Vita :)

I am not sure why Red fans are so gleeful /obsessed about Sony finances.

A lot of people still remember the days before Red when Sony was the only real player, and their cameras cost ~$200,000. It's going to take a while for people to forget that, and Sony's not been doing a great job of giving people a reason to. We'll see if they do tomorrow.

The primary and currently only competitor to Sony in the 4K projection arena is 4K DLP, available from several manufacturers. Red is not a competitor (yet) because their product doesn't exist (yet).

This thread started out discussing cameras, and it is still titled as such. Projectors and cameras have very little to do with each other in terms of their intended sales audience and purpose.

Guy's its finally here, a first GLIMPSE:

And this ain't no photoshop job like my previous one!

And like Curt and I said, neither of the new models have a real evf. F5 is Alexa sized.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad manufacturers are giving us more options. It pushes the entire industry forward. I think the brand bashing is lame and people should move beyond it. I'm sure even though for marketing reasons most models are crippled feature wise, I'm sure they will produce solid images. In the end that's all that matters.

The F5 pictured above has one of their new lenses (made by Cooke exclusively for Sony). There will be a new set of 6 t2.0 lenses available. Which is probably more exciting than the new cameras. Hope they are aiming for the CP.2, Canon Cine Primes market.

No prices yet, but likely soon everything will be announced.

More tech specs about the new F5 and F55:

slog2gamma, hypergammas, 14 stops, the F55 will has Ultra Wide Color Gamut and same color filter array as F65.

Both the F5 and F55 will require an external recorder to record RAW - but the F55 will record 4k internally (via codec) but not the F5.

Global shutter on the F55.. That's huge in my book. Hopefully would be the end of split frame exposures..

Yup, the lenses looked great. Thats the most exciting thing for me.

Yeah F5 will require external recorder to do both RAW as well as 4K resolution capture. So that is kind of a bummer. Still glad to see all the new options coming to the market.

Those new Lenses look fantastic! How much... how much???

If I had to make a guesstimate $25,000 - $35,000 (set of 6). Could be pleasantly surprised but the lenses will be sweet. Made by Cooke!
Looks like the RPP's might be coming down in price soon...

Made by Cooke actually makes me nervous. How can they not canabalize their own lenses while retaining the Cooke look?

they probably use whatever glass the previous Sony primes had and Cook just did the manufacturing in a metal housing instead of the cheap plastic housings. I'm sure they also tweaked the previous optics to get things optimal. Sure it won't have the signature Cooke look... I'm sure Sony paid them a small fortune in the deal.

Couldn't pay me... Love my Epic those other rigs are white noise.

"Currently" being the only relevant context of your post Mike. The rest is like saying 35mm projectors are irrelevant to 35mm film cameras ... Capture and delivery are inextricably linked IMHO

Hopefully these new lenses aren't plastic shit like their last attempt..

Pretty good:
2k+4k simultaniously, nd filter wheel, PL style base lens mount, $15K. I think we'll see some Epic tech price slashing.....

metal and made by Cooke exclusively for Sony. They actually have a look very close to S4's. It will be interesting to see pricing.
