  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Worthy competitor for the EPIC??

Global shutter, 14 stops, excellent low-light? Sounds like dragon, but at 4k-only... But damn, global shutter.

Has any official pricing been announced?

I'm confused as to what's in the box and how much the various bits are going to cost. SxS records 4k & 2k XAVC simultaneously internally, right? But then you still need the RAW recorder (which uses different media?) for RAW?

Only the F5 can record internally to 4K - but it's codec based. To record 4K raw, you will need an external recorder. Sonys marketing speak about recording simultaneously 4K and 2K, is again, with a recorder.

But the F55 is higher end than the F5, so why would it not be able to do 4k/2k simultaneously as well?

Also, I read 2k 120fps in a scheduled/free firmware update for F5 and 120 for F55.

don't know if you have already noticed. f65 will get a firmware update which enables 8k and 6k up to 120fps!

recorded to 4k though. So basically a downscale 8k/6k to 4K. But that should look extremely sharp!

not sure if you are right. i was told 8k and 6k directly to the recorder. of course still 4k possible.

we now have a downscale from 8k to 4k matt.

Not at 120fps you don't.

Yes, I agree with Craig. Even more than Red, I think Arri's Alexa will be affected the most by the new Sony cameras in February. I'm surprised that Arri has yet to announce or demo a 4K camera.

Now official on the Sony site. Out of courtesy to Red you will have to find the links yourself .

Looks great, finally a normal viewfinder on a normal place, really good they understood this :) when will prices be announced?

"240 fps 2K RAW, with the optional AXS-R5 outboard recorder and a planned upgrade,
achieves the highest frame rates most productions will need, while retaining exceptional, 16-bit image quality. This not only exceeds 12-bit RAW with 16 times as many Red, Green and Blue gradations. By design, it exceeds the capabilities of human vision!" --- http://pro.sony.com/bbsccms/assets/files/show/highend/pdf/F55_Camera.pdf

Pretty impressive specs... that's 240fps RAW... with no cropping on the sensor.

now i am waiting for the new price announcement from red, but i still need to see f55 footage, global shutter is big

Arri will have a hard time explaining why HD will be good enough in 2013. Clever move by Sony to have a consumer-ish model at a moderate entry price point, most likely hurting Canon 300 quite a bit. But this will still be only 2K, unless externally recorded at extra $.$$$, while compared to Scarlet it will be expensive. The F55 is certainly aimed at people with TV backgrounds, who will just trust the brand, as Arri is being trusted by people with movie backgrounds. Neither F55 nor Alexa (at 2K) are reasonably priced in comparison to RED.
