World first capture and broadcast live 4K Ultra HD for Roland Garros*

Sport is a great laboratory for testing the latest technological innovations. This is the case of Roland Garros, where France Télévisions, with the French Tennis Federation, and through the AMP Visual expertise, helped capture on center court Philippe Chatrier several games 4K.
The aim was to show that it was possible to establish a technical device relatively quickly, without changing the working methods acquired in HD.The shots were made by three 4K cameras, two models Canon EOS C500 equipped with focal 30/300 (PL mount) and a slowed-A FT For One camera.

Regarding workflow, two 3G Canon RAW outputs were routed from the central court to the AMP board placed in the space RG Lab. The RAWS files were débayerisés via Astro HB7513, which gave birth to four HD streams in 3G camera (4K picture cut in 4) to attack the Snell Kahuna mixer. 4K camera images FT One were read directly from the camera, which has an internal player. Images slow 4K could reach up to 900 frames / s.On dressing, items were taken from the main cover (size Fusion Kahuna upconverted 4K). Only a few elements such as logos France Télévisions or that of Roland Garos for transition effects were designed 4K.

In the end, it was possible to have 4K images in full screen or HD images embedded in PIP (up to 4 Full HD) on a wallpaper. The main program was ingested in an EVS XT3 server and read by it to be displayed in the showroom of France Télévisions on the 4K screen. The main program and a daily 4-minute summary were encoded by the company ATEME and broadcast via satellite Eutelsat.
AMP Visual provided important work in designing the architecture and the adaptation of cameras and lenses for this project, which augurs well for the future.

yes in Japan that was tests, this one was live broadcast.

For how they did it technically, the only details I have is above in the text, unfortunately I am not an engineer and I won't be able to give you more infos.

Live to whom? Who has a 4K broadcast infrastructure in place, a broadcast format, and a transmission apparatus to send this out? And who has the capacity to receive it?

I'm French but live in Indonesia so I don't witness it in Roland Garros but I know they have big screens outside so my guess is it was broadcast live on a 4K screen there.
the article says also that it was broadcast at the France TV headquarters on a 4K screen so I guess it was also a kind of test but the way I understand it, it was broadcast live via satellite for the first time.

Anyway, the only point I share this link here was to point that 4K live broadcast will be very soon a reality, as soon as we will have the screen that go with it ! :))

Uhhhh.... OK. but there's a world of difference between a closed loop test and general deployment of a broadcast system, especially when there are no standards in place. I would point out that there were experimental closed transmission tests of HD for over 10 years prior to its actual rollout with actual broadcast standards. If you're talking about broadband delivery, that's much more likely, but Internet service - certainly within the US - has to be vastly improved for that to become a common reality for a significant portion of consumers as well.
