Workflow BEFORE RedRay

So... I'm working on my movie in premiere.. And now it's done.. I want to encode it for REDRay. What's the workflow from Premiere to REDRay?

This is assuming I own the codec cause I bought RedRay of course.

Please explain.

You'll want to export a 16 bit DPX or TIF sequence in either sRGB or REC.709 in a DCI 4K wrapper (4096x2160). Then import and attach the stereo audio file.

Thanks for the answer Phil.. I am currently looking at export for DPX. Header choices are SMPTE/DPX or Cineon. No mention of sRGB or REC709 in export settings.

Also the DCI 4k wrapper.. Can you dumb that down for me a little bit.. Not sure what you mean or how to get there.

Seriously though. When trying to squeak out the most visual quality in encoding to more "cinema minded" formats you need to have quality source material.

You can of course encode from the .R3Ds natively if that works for your project. I suspect there will be more support for 12 bit formats in the future down the line.

heh heh heh. Yeah I'm a DCP virgin... First time doing this.

So:

Import R3Ds into Premiere and edit.
Export a DPX sequence
Create a DCI 4k wrapper (How?)
Open REDCine import file
Attach audio file to it
Encode to REDRay Player Codec

Is that it?

Basically no matter if you put UHD 4K (3840x2160) or whatever resolution you want to export your sequence within a 4096x2160 (DCI 4K) container. Fairly trivial to do via Adobe Media Encoder or through After Effects on export.

Am I assuming correctly here that a plugin must be purchased to accomplish what you are speaking of? I see something called wraptor, but it does not support 4k.. At least not the free version.. Of course

By DCI wrapper, Phil just means that your still images need to be sized to the 4096x2160 DCI 4K spec resolution. You don't need a plugin like Wraptor or whatever that would be used to create an actual DCI distribution package. So if you're targeting a 3840x2160 distribution of your film, you would matte that 3840x2160 image onto a 4096x2160 frame, giving it small black bars on the sides.

I don't want to hijack this thread but I do have a question that is related. I was able to find the REDRAY manual online (I don't have one yet) the second part deals with the rrencode plugin. It only works with REDCINE-X Pro 20.3 but I am up to version 30x. I have zips for 20.2 and 21.3 so I must have skipped it... Does it come as a download after registering the REDRAY or do I have to contact support also can 20.3 and 30 live on the same computer? I know it is supposed to be pretty slow, any idea how long a 10 minute clip would take on a 6 core Mac Pro (2013)? Finally will the highest quality setting (cinema) playback ok on the REDRAY or is it intended for the unreleased pro version.

When you purchase the RedRay you get a version of REDCINE-X Pro that isn't freely available on the site to download. That has the RRencode plugin associated with it that enables you to encode for REDRAY.

Revisiting this thread (yes Im still trying to justify the purchase of this REDRAY).

Is it possible to export an XML from FCPX into Resolve 11 then DCP?

Im no where near a Resolve station for at least 6 hours to test myself.

FYI, RREncode RCXPro 20.3 does not work on Yosimete for me.
I had to roll back to Mountain Lion.
