  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wooden Camera vs. VF AB Battery Solution

The end result of the two are very similar, you just have to do some minor building with the WC plate. You get the QuickBack and choose an adapter plate to use with your choice of battery plate. If you already have a battery plate you can use it.

I'm late to the party but own the VF IDX version. It doesn't show percentage even with RED bricks but it's really fast on and off. I watched my camera as it dropped in voltage and have found my bricks to last 3 hours or so on the Plate. So it's really easy to tell. It starts out around 16V to 15.9V, and drains down to 12, and the camera will power down. I haven't had any hickups with it. I just love how simple it is to get on and off the camera. I'm really looking forward to my sidehandle so I can leave that on the camera and just remove my bricks and plate when I need to change how I'm shooting.

+1 for Wooden Camera

Since they're both on backorder, B&H is a good option for the plate (picked mine up in store last week). I also bought the Wooden Camera Quickback and AB Battery Back. Assembly took less than 5 minutes.

I don't think you can purchase separately at VF, unfortunately.

Why would you want to, besides having a backplate I guess. I mean each has there benefits I suppose. I like only having one piece to worry about.

I haven't tried it. It looks like VF makes an outstanding product, but I needed to get up and running (and wanted to go AB). This was my solution (no side handle yet) and it worked out very well! Plus, Ryan @ Wooden Camera is EXTREMELY helpful and a great communicator.

I have them both for AB and they each have their place. Installing the four screws for the VF means that the REDMote cannot attach to the back. It is very solid and does mount and remove quickly. I opted not to bolt the WC plate on, so it also goes on and comes off quick. I am adding a thumb screw from a Top Mount to make it "captive" however. I don't think its in danger of breaking off, but I could see a clumsy AC setting it down wrong and possibly getting enough shearing force to pop it off. Since this could yank the power connector I'm going to err on the side of caution. You could, of course, bolt it on and not worry about it if that works for you. The Wooden Camera positions the AB plate about a 1/4 too low for my larger Battery 4 Broadcast batts. They fit, but press down on the power cable in a way that is worrisome. These Batts are similar to GlobalMediaPro and other makers so they may have a similar issue, but I don't own those. Ryan at WC said they may put another set of holes higher to get around this. I will have the plate re-tapped by my machinist and all will be well. It is PERFECT for AB Dionic90 and Dionic HCs, which are what I prefer to use anyway. Both very good products and I don't regret either purchase.

I went with WC because I already have a REDplate.
I plan on putting the DSMC adapter module on the back of the camera and then not worrying about bolting the WC plate on. If there is damage for some reason it will just be to the adapter module. I like the idea of being able to pop off the battery plate and mount it somewhere else or leave it off for ultralight configs.

The VF bolt things for stress relief is a cool idea but it seems like the main reason for quick-release would be to attach the REDmote or another module in which case it wouldn't really be that quick.

AbelCine has a few of the Anton Bauer and Switronix plates in stock. We also sell the Wooden Camera products and can sell the Viewfactor products as well.

Stampede time! ;-)

Got my Quickback, bottom and top plates from WC already. Got confirmation yesterday that the battery plate and mounting plate shipped yesterday. Can't wait to put it all together.

What shipping method does WC use? I got a shipping notice but no tracking number or delivery date.

Got my Wooden stuff today - IDX plate, Quickback, top handle and easy plate. My Scarlet arrives tomorrow. Just need that thing called the Side Handle and I'll be good to go....

I am debating between either the Wooden Camera's AB system with their Quickback system, and the VF AB adapter. From looking at them both, it looks like Wooden Camera's system might be a bit more adaptable to other options for attachments b/c of their Quickback. Does VF offer any advantages over Wooden Camera?

The Wooden camera kit is great equipment. We are very careful to pick the best equipment and conscientious suppliers. For camera accessories Wooden camera is our go to supplier.

There is a bonus too, the goods are real, you pay for the goods and they arrive via Fedex very promptly !

Are you saying that VF stuff is vaporware/etherware? The VF plate is incredible, well built, and arrived very quickly... it's very real, as are all of their beautifully-made RED accessories...

No not at all. I just find these days if I order something with some suppliers there can be a very long wait till stuff arrives.
