Great article on pages 17-19 in the Winter issue of DGA Quarterly.
"...Fincher is effusive in his praise of RED, noting that when his crew needed to reduce the size and weight of the ONE for a scene in The Social Network, within a three-day span the company delivered not one, but two lighter, smaller versions made out of carbon fiber."

Other great stuff about RED ONE and Jim Jannard's company.

Way to go Jim, Jarred et. al.

Carbon fiber RED One's!? I want to know more about this!

Uh... what? Carbon Fiber? I wonder if they'll be employing that tech in the Epics and Scarlets too? Holy crap that's cool...

The article is okay. Carbon fiber bodies.... neat. Nicely done boys.

Carbon fiber is a great material for a camera body.

The coefficient of thermal expansion is near zero...no warpage or movement.

I hope that Scarlet fixed lens/sensor housing uses short fiber carbon and like an Ultem plastic base material. Same mechanicals as metal with rock solid temp stability.

W. Herzog:
It's an immature camera created by computer people who do not have a sensibility or understanding for the value of high-precision mechanics, which has a 200-year history. It's terrible: Whenever you have to reboot the camera, it takes 4½ minutes or so. It drove me insane, because sometimes something is happening and you can't just push the button and record it. An assistant cameraman said this camera would be ideal if we were filming the National Library in Paris, which has been sitting there for centuries. But everything that moves faster than a library is a problem for the RED. Super 35 mm celluloid is still better.
The first part is crap, while the booting time is exaggerated. It's less than half of this, and will be a fraction of a fraction of then in the next generation cameras. I find it unfair to blame the booting time for anything - after all they had chosen their tool and should have learned very early on that it is not the kind of camera that you just switch on and shoot.
Heck, they could have gotten a double battery system.
He doesn't give any details about the lack of understanding for mechanincs.
I love his work, but criticism should be better substantiated than this almost-FUD.
