On the Raven product page, it says that an expander module is required to power the Raven. But would it not be possible to attach the new cable-less WC quick back battery module right into the camera?

You can attach the cableless Wooden Camera plate straight into the camera. It is considered a 3rd party Expander or Module.

but that would leave you with NO AC/DC way to power, as i understand.
it's weird they left that out.

That's what I wanted to hear!

So just to make sure I'm correct. This kit should get me going:

Red Raven Brain - 6000
Wooden Camera cableless battery plate - 645
Lemo Adapter A - 195
2x 120GB Red Mini Mag - 1700
Red Station Mini Mag - 195

And then my current Touch 5", and batteries? I would go for one of the Raven packages, but I don't need the Jetpack, and I don't use v-mounts. So it seems more cost effective to piece it out. And this gets me there for $8735!

That's ok with me. I can count on one hand the number of times I have EVER powered AC/DC. I plan to get the base expander later on, but I'm curious how cheap I can go to start out.

but like i said, you have no way to power it except batteries, so get a lot of them, if you want to shoot for a whole day.
i would look for a used i/o expander module.

oh good, got it. im always on AC when im not handheld…
id order that battery pack now then, it wont even be available until april i believe, and thats for people that already preordered.

Generally speaking I strongly recommend finding "some way" to provide AC Adapter support on your camera. Whenever you are doing things like Black Shading, Firmware updates, powering off of mains, or just prepping prior to a shoot; it makes life much easier.

i agree, couldnt imagine not having AC for certain instances.

That's good advice. And like I said, I will be getting the I/O module later on. But right now I have enough batteries to last 10 hours of camera runtime without even charging. So I'm not super worried.

let us know how it goes, in april i guess.

Here is a product idea- V-mount adapter for AC power supply;-)

I have the old WC plate, if I upgrade it will it also work like this without base expander

Ps who needs ports lol?

So the WC battery plate attaches to a WC quick back, which attaches to the camera. From what I understand, the old WC quick back for DSMC1 is not compatible with DSMC2 bodies. Now, you can simply buy the new Weapon/Scarlet-W/Raven quick back and attach your old battery plate to that, but then you will need a lemo power input on the body because the old power plates communicate via that, not contacts.

TL;DR... no. You need a new WC quick back+old battery plate+I/O module -- OR -- new WC quick back+new battery plate.

You can power the camera using any accessory that delivers power to the Pogo pins at the back of the camera.

One option is a F&V V-Mount AC Power Adapter for $60. They worked to power a Red One: so I'm guessing they shouldn't have any problem with the newer, more energy-efficient Red cameras.
