  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wood N Camera EVF Mod

This is pretty awesome...thank you for sharing, Dan.

Question to all the Weapon owners out there...have there been any improvements to the SDI lag that is present in the Epic/Scarlet bodies? The lag wasn't incredibly drastic, but I always felt operating with a Red LCD/EVF had a slight benefit for this reason, though I would love to be able to move to a much less expensive EVF system if the performance is comparable. Would love to hear back from users on this aspect (though I realize it may take some time to get that kind of feedback as the weapons and options slowly trickle out).
 
I don't think it'll be long before BMD just releases this EVF as a separate product with more features built in geared towards a wide range of cameras.

except you fail to realize how slow they are over their at BM, it will be a year.
i wonder if wooden camera will do this for you.

I'm currently choosing a good universal EVF and up to this point I was set on Gratical X, but BMD being 2x more resolution is really great. The only thing that stops me is features, I need things like 2x anamorphic desqueeze inside the EVF because if you take Alexa Mini, it won't be able to desqueeze internally when recording OpenGate RAW, only ProRes is desqueezed. So I hope that BMD will consider making a separate EVF.

Dan, can you take a minute and list features that are present in the EVF itself now? I'd really appreciate it.
 
I could be wrong Demetri, but I think the Alexa Mini would desqueeze output on the sdi tap even when recording raw so that a client monitor would be "viewable". I don't think this VF desqueezes in its onboard hardware - but I'll check when I do my review.

anyway - you could put this looped out of something like a smallhd 502 or 702 (assistant's monitor) - I like having both an EVF and a monitor available , and for me I don't want to give up the touch functionality of my Red 7" touch which is very nice.

Now I understand the mod. This is getting interesting.
Wondering why RED still didn't do anything like that. They've been shooting digital and 4k+ since years and it's been years we where asking for it.
Hope this also will lower their overpriced evf's.
How is the optical system of this VF? Can you change the immersive experience? zoom in or out?

The BMD EVF is in stock for $1,495.00 at B&H

...just remember bmd products are "disposable" solutions,
there are zero repair options after 1 year,
and they typically will not honor their warrenty after 30 days of ownership.

$1500 is a bit pricey for a throw away product.
May as well keep saving and get the weapon EVF.
 
I use graticals on both my Dragons and every other camera I use. They really do the job and are a great buy because of their multi platform adaptability, but they are clunky. When I checked out the new EVF at IBC it was love at first look. And talk about haptic heaven, they just feel right. As soon as I get my weapon upgrades the $5000 credits are going to the EVFs.
 
So, this is what I have to report, from hands on test with of the BM EVF, with mod using my RED Stealth:


EVF looks fantastic.- no de-squeeze although could probably make a request to BMD for firmware update
- 1 to 1 pixel zoom does work on the monitor feed using the zoom button on EVF, you can also use one of the keys on the body to pixel zoom in camera and the output is displayed in the EVF
- you loose the HD-SDI port as there is no pass through
- there is hardly any lag in the picture, about the same as the touchscreen

Pluses and Minuses, as usual.

I sure hope so, but this is not listed at the specs page on Mini's website at the moment.

Actually, this is a nice idea, I'm receiving my 702 in a couple of days.
 
Loop through Teradek Bolt=almost always have that in place, it seems.

Hi Patrick!

I have spent a fair bit of time on the immersion of techniques and things, such as trompe l'oeil, for the last three decades. The goal was to define what made immersion, therefore successful for me (and others). I have given up, except to say that contrast is a preeminent factor and stereopsis of the observer is extremely helpful. Then the whole analysis gets meddled for me. Well, by my humble analysis, a monocular element can't be (to me) truly immersive. If OTOH, we are referring to getting so intothe viewing of the EV that one is no longer fully cognizant of looking through the EV, then I would say that can occur with most devices, if the subject matter is enticing and the quality of the EV even simply satisfactory, depending. This piece is no exception, whilst being, by current standards, exceptional, on a technical level. More to follow.

I have used several methods, but on top of the IKAN MD7 works just fine-not truly on camera, of course. Really depends on the application, but never unable to configure it satisfactorily.

BTW, I usually attach EVF's to a USSY-Tek bracket,-especially facile and applicaable to my left eye dominance as well.

Hi ALl,

Just to clarify - this EVF does allow the ANA desqueeze to display, if using a RED camera and that in camera function-which is simply great. The EVF does not currently support this within its processing options, at this time. So, for other cameras that do/will not offer that incamera ability, there is not joy, in that regard.

Having said all that, the form factor, quality of display, etc for application in our RED cameras make this a very suitable device. Can't wait for Red's NEW EVF, though... This could likely become a backup, depending.
