Hi guys -

I am excited to finally share a project that I started a long while ago, back in 2014. Its been a long journey with a ton of beautiful stuff not even making it into this final cut.

The first Pine Ridge trip was on the Dragon, second on full Spectrum Dragon (the project actually started as a B&W piece) and then ended last fall with the Full Spectrum/IR shoot on the Monstro 8K and Gotham Filmworks Shotover F1.

I'll share a blog post with some BTS and a bit more background story in the next days but for the time being, here is the video.

Hope you enjoy

Nice work Tim. Could you tell us more about lenses you've used on this project please?

Thank you! It was a super mixed bag.

Pine Ridge Trip #1 was still on my old Nikkors - primarily the 50mm 1.2. I believe only a couple shots with that made it in the final cut.
Pine Ridge Trip #2 was on my Leica Rs. E.g. the first two shots are on the 19mm, shot a lot on the 35mm Summilux.
Portraits in NYC city were all shot on the 35mm Leica R Summilux as well.
EIR Aerials on the Monstro were shot with the Duclos 1.7x Expander and a Angenieux Optimo DP 25-250

Also the majority of the footage was shot on the Full Spectrum OLPF. This added some crazy IR pollution - as intended to be monochrome that was never a big concern.
I have to say though that I really dig the look and it actually even added something interesting to the color version.

Cheers,
Tim

Tim this piece is gorgeous. Congrats.

Gorgeous work Tim, so the full spectrum was also used on the color shoot with no IR blockers? Did you add an IR filter to cut the visible spectrum for the NYC aerials?

Thanks everybody for the positive feedback!!

@Cole: Yes thats right. I was committed to finish this in B&W and the full spectrum gave an interesting quality to the footage. As a result the images came in wayyyy blue - even at 10,000K and -15 it was still pretty cold.

This is the original B&W:

This is in color set to 10,000K and -15 Tint:

As far as the Ektachrome IR footage, a very light IR cut filter was used. I could only source a 4x4 Wratten filter in time - so as a result there was some bleeding on the side of the wide frames. Here is a still with my rough monitoring LUT that includes the Red and Blue channel swap as well as some curves and saturation changes. Kath Raisch at CO3 definitely found a much better and cleaner approach to keep the nature IR elements and city more separated.

Beautiful work Tim. As for your choice of glass, all those lenses except the Angenieux Optimo DP 25-250 tends to render a softer look imho.

Thank you! 100% - the DP 25-250 was unfortunately the only choice we had for glass. That being said story wise I don't mind it. It actually makes sense that the nature footage is softer and the city aerials have a harsher and sharper look to them :)

Cheers!

That is gorgeous! Great work, Tim! :)

Seriously amazing.

Was the Leica 19mm you used the V2? How do you like the them?

This video is so well polished. Congrats man.
