  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

i'm more or less thrilled by Scarlet's specs so far. if we consider the released spec list as set in stone, there are a couple of things I would hope the Red Team will include.

1. true focus ring, none of that free spinning Sony-style nonsense. lockable for 35mm adapters.
2. manual zoom room, tight, responsive (and lockable for 35mm adapters)
3. OIS, optical image stabalization
4. 48khz, 16bit audio, 2 channels at a minimum, 96khz, 24bit, 4 channels as an ideal.
5. waveform monitoring built-in to the LCD
6. 2.39:1 aspect ratio guides (positionable higher or lower in the frame)
7. manual control of exposure, gain, etc that doesn't require you to dig thru the menu. would prefer tangible dials and button.
8. flip mode - for 35mm adapter users
9. wifi timecode sync between Scarlets

PLEASE no whining about specs that have already been announced here, there's more than enough of that going around. let's operate under the assumption that there is very little wiggle room on those and concentrate on the aspects of this camera that are not necessarily set yet.

OIS is a big one. 95% of the time I have it turned off on my HV20, but when I need it, it's a life saver. The question is how much would that feature cost to implement.

The WiFi timecode sync would be slick.

I'm hoping the final version smells like peppermint with a hint of milk chocolate... but with the manual ability to turn this feature off when I'm in bear country. Oh, and I hope it floats in case the mount on my kayak falls off. This is the camera I've been waiting for.

I'd buy the Snozzberry edition, for sure!

I second that.

Well structured.

sure, but the specs haven't. i would love 24bit for a little more headroom.

That makes sense but you mentioned 16/48. Which is the obvious minimum so I thought maybe you didn't see the post confirming two channels of audio yet.

Zak is ex-zak-tly right! :)

I was just about to write the very same list of features!

I would change 2.39:1 aspect ratio to 'user definable frame guides'.

True and repeatable focus and zoom rings are a huge one for me. I think people would be willing to pay more for a real lens, instead of the Sony/Panasonic style freely spinning encoders. (Did you guys know that the reason their lenses are like that is because they are so cheap the focus does not actually track when you zoom? They have to electronically drive the focus to compensate. It's an inexpensive way to make zoom lenses, but Red won't do that, right?)

Red, I hope you're listening. This is an important list of very reasonable requests that will drive more nails into the right coffins!

Upload your own guides as transparent PNG's... just an idea.

Free-spinning focus ring is pretty much non-sense, agree on that.

How much hustle to implement 96khz 24bit audio?

Even small time portable audio recorders do this... Would it be difficult for scarlet?

How about EIS? You'd loose some resolution... But hey! It's 3K.

1 and 8 are very important. Totally second that.

I agree with everythin Zak said

Most important IMHO is:

1. high sensitivity, very low noise sensor

Agreed, a focus ring that you can actually pull focus on is a must. The EX1 seems like a good template for this?

Exactly. Same goes for Epic.

24-bit sound? Guys, that's fine, but what kind of noise levels do you expect from itty-bitty preamps in such a camera? If 24/96 requires any extra engineering time at all, forget it. Better to spend that time on a digital input so you can use an external A/D converter and dictate your own quality forever.

Versatile flip modes would be nice for more than 35mm adapters: Sometimes you might want to mount the camera upside-down (using the tripod socket) in a vehicle or other odd location. Having a flip mode (which may just be a metadata tag for Redcode) would save doing it in post and transcoding the properly oriented result.

I know many have said this, but a TRUE focus is vital. Yet I would be shocked for it to lack this and still call it pro.

This may not be the clearest suggestion...I think keeping in mind that probably many purchasers of this camera still love shoulder mounted rigs, with all the weight and function. It would be great to see how scarlet mounts on some of the existing red handles to basically convert it into a shoulder mounted camera. I would plan on counter balancing the back end with a RED Raid.

For audio: having a "break-away" box for XLR would be helpful.

Dual Zebra stripes for getting two ranges always helps.

Manual iris ring

I feel like I may be asking far, far too much for a sub $3000 camera, but it seems the concept is sooo close to being everything so many of us videographers have dreamed for... and more.

Thanks Jim once again for giving the camera industry the kick in the groin it has needed for so long!

n+1) Full-size XLR connectors
n+2) I second the wish for a waveform monitor, or better yet, RGB parade
n+3) Low datarate modes around 8MBps (heavy compression and/or down-rez)
n+4) Built-in ND filters
n+5) Analog (vs. digital on the RED One) video gain (like Canon DSLRs for lower noise at higher ISOs)
n+6) Ability to overlay stills as an "onion skin" or quickly switch between to check continuity or aid stop-motion animation
n+7) Wide lens (~8-64mm)

Great idea. A digital input would be ideal. Keep the sound quick and dirty for non-critical run and gun type stuff but with the ability to use external pres and converters when you need it.
