  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Wireless HD on set monitoring

Sounds like $2500 gets you longer range and component. Thanks.

When you say that the IDX is better in open range, and since you use them a lot... have you used them in a wide open field? And if so, how did they perform? Any difference?

Thanks for the info, hope you don't mind adding a bit more. Thanks.

to jens - is 24fps ok?

IDX camwave. I own one, picture is very good but the range is not more than 15m/45ft

Jens, can you confirm, that when using 24 frames project on red - you can still use this unit? i cannot find this on theirs page - i mean - there is just 23,98 PsF mentioned, not 24p and just within 1080 size, not 720.

can you tell us your opinion about this.

have you tried this with 24 fps, 720p - when using it for realtime viewing?

thank you,

filip

p.s. do you have maybe TWO of this units?

The RED outputs 720p/59.94 on a 24 or 23.98 project, so the IDX works fine. We used them on ER with almost a perfect track record on stage and on the backlot. That said, on location... less luck.

Brook,

thank you for really fast answer.

i have another one -

as i understand red is using 720p over 59.94 to deliver 24 fps (23,98) on the monitor screen. so if i have monitor capable to receive 24 fps it will indicate that on display when connecting. this is ok.

BUT

what will happen when switching to 720p and the project is 25 fps? will this work also? i am asking this, because i need to use also downconverter on the set to record clips and i NEVER managed to downconvert signal from red to record signal as PAL. it's definitely NOT recognized as PAL.

(when connecting directly to red with downconverter (AJA) signal is ALWAYS converted as NTSC ???? , despite the fact that camera is working in 25fps mode).

so, my question is - will this unit transmit proper, clean and correct 720p, 25 frames signal, which i wish to downconvert to PAL?

thank you,

filip

For the most part yes, the extra buck will get you a few more options. I have used them in wide open fields, wide open backlots, and wide open airplane hangers. It has worked almost flawlessly. I would say a good 75-100ft away in plain sight, no problem. But that is if there is no additional interference in the area. Keep in mind that around that distance the signal will start to fade. You can of course place the receiver on a cart or in a case and run a BNC to the village.

As mentioned, the IDX isn't as effective on sets with multiple walls. However, I used it inside of a jet inside of a hanger (with the village about another 30-40ft away) and it was flawless. I was able to accurately record dailies to a deck from the SDI signal and work my bartec for focus without annoying the operator inside the tight cockpit.

You need to adjust the monitoring output of the RED from 60 to 50 timebase. Then you'll have no problems going to your PAL downconvert.

Thank you for the info and ideas 007! It sounds like they are solid performers. I feel better as they should be fine for my use since I plan to stay well within range at all times and we'll shoot in a VERY low interference area.

Mitch,

i tested exactly this with my downconverters and never received proper signal.
(just to be sure that incoming downconverted signal is PAL, i used PAL only monitor, to avoid mistakes which may happen when using multi system monitors)

maybe - if you have possibility to test RED signal also with downconverting to PAL - and MONTIORING on "PAL only" monitor, you will receive different results comparing to mine, but at least with my downconverters this was impossible to receive. i know that this sounds strange, but after downconverting RED's signal from 720p to PAL, signal is NOT pal.

the same downconverters work ok with different HD signals when downconverting to pal (1080, 720p, from sony, panasonic or jvc).

strange...
(but maybe this is way off topic for this thread)
