  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Windows Thunderbolt + PPro + Red Rocket = cool demo

GPU cards will NOT work in Thunderbolt yet.

As I mentioned in the previous post. NVIDIA & AMD would have to write a special driver to make it work correctly in the TB Chassis. Intel also needs to get involved with the TB driver. I have met with Intel & NVIDIA on this question several times. Yes, they fully understand we want this, just no commitment on a if or a when.

Works fine on Windows. Thunderbolt being PCI-e over miniDP, Windows sees it as a GPU attached to a normal PCI-e port. Only the Thunderbolt device needs to have a driver. The GPUs can use standard drivers. In fact, the very first device to use Thunderbolt back in early 2011 was Sony Vaio Z's amazing Power Media Dock, which houses an AMD Radeon HD 6630M among other things. The new Sony Vaio Z (early 2012) will bring a 2nd gen Power Media Dock soon with Radeon HD 6650M. Of course performance is slightly lower than laptops with the same GPU as Thunderbolt's PCIe 4x interface does cause a bottleneck. Should also work under Linux distros, but haven't read any reports yet. No news on when or if it will be possible Mac OS X though.

Nice demo! I am always super impressed with all the aforementioned companies and its great to see how much performance you can pack in such a small foot print. I guess the towers days really are numbered? I am about to get a new mac with thunderbolt just to update to this nifty new workflow! Thanks for the demo

Thanks guys! Great to see you posting here as well DKH!
