  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,i did´nt find newer suggestions for ideal components for a Windows based Workstation using RC-X,Premiere-pro with 8k R3D Helium footage.
CPU Processor ? i9, Xeon ?
GPU graphic Card? nvidia 1080 ti ? SLI ? or nvidia quadro 6000?
RAM? 64 GB ?
Storage: Raid, SSD`s ?

Thanks !

What is your approx. budget? and what do you expect from the workstation (speedwise)?

I just made an i9 setup over the last few days.

ASUS Rampage Extreme 6.
i9 7980xe
128gb RAM
2 x gtx108ti
512GB Samsung M2 drive for OS
1TB Samsung M2 drive for scratch
2TB Samsung M2 drive (backordered)

From an old PC:
areca raid card
BMD Mini Monitor 4k
RR-X

The RAID is still initialising, once that's done i'll be able to see if it was worth leaving my macpro trashcan, and if the RR-X is still needed. I probably could have gone for a cheaper processor, but I figured with the total I was spending, why not.

If I was in the US I'd probably just buy something from Puget Systems preconfigured - I used their website as a starting point for my build.

Per Simon's suggestion, I second Puget Systems. I made the switch from Mac to PC about a year and half ago in total confusion on the PC side of what processor/build to get. I'm also a very happy customer from their support of my many questions initially to final build. They were really good at working within my budget and not trying to upsell me.

Their article section is priceless and deep of application specific data that will help you with your questions as well.

Puget has some great articles. Your system will depend on what software your using. If your sticking with Premiere then the 7940x, 128gb ram, and a single 1080ti is the best way to go. Hit me up if you need any help.

Thanks, my Problem is that i am situated in Austria, Europe, so Puget could be difficult.
But another question: has anybody tried the differencens between one 1080ti and two of them in SLI mode?
And does anybody use the quadro P 4000 or 6000?

I wouldn't consider that as a problem.
In a puget article you can read the differences between the 1080ti 1x 2x 3x and 4x and the TitanV(which is the fastest consumer card at the moment € 3000) 1x,2x,3x,4x. https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/DaVinci-Resolve-14-GPU-Scaling-Core-i9-vs-Xeon-W-vs-Dual-Xeon-SP-1121/ and in a Slashcam article you can read about the differences between 1080ti and the AMD RX VEGA 56 https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Auf-Augenhoehe-mit--Ti-tanen---AMD-Vega-56-unter-DaVinci-Resolve-14--Was-bringts--63--Vega56-unter-Resolve-14.html#Was_b
Titan V is a lot faster than the P6000 (P6000 is the quadro version of the titan X(p)), the P6000 has more memory (24 GB) than the TitanV(16GB) and 1080ti(11GB).
Another advantage of the P6000 is that you have 10 bits OpenGL overlay for 10 bits color in apps like Adobe PP, AE, PS, etc... (VEGA FE (16GB) has this to but at a much lower price, so I picked 2 of them).

The fastest CPU at the moment is for sale in Germany at Caseking https://www.caseking.de/en/der8auer-core-i9-7980xe-4-7-ghz-skylake-x-advanced-edition-hpit-492.html#tech_specs and here is a link to the guy who makes it work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOOKqxYe_Bc.

1 more thing never put NVidia GPU's in SLI-mode when using them with software like Davinci Resolve, RC-X, etc... SLI is only for GAMING.

After some Internet Research About 8k it seems the Question is not the decision between P6000 or 1080ti ,it is P600 or Radeon pro ssg. Has anybody informations About this? Thanks.

Ive got a 1 month old PC with 8k Full realtime with footage at 5-7:1.

Asus Prime X299 Deluxe
i7-7820X OC at 4ghz
64gb DDR4
1x GTX 1080ti running 3 monitors at 1920x1080
4x 2To WD Green on a adaptec RAID card from my old workstation.
BMD MiniMonitor 4k
M2 for system, and SSD for software

3500€ for the whole computer (case, psu...)

It's insane to be able to do that. I have yet to see it slow down, wether it's Premiere Pro or Resolve.

I don't know what sites you visited but from my point of view it's far from the true with the software you're using.

The Radeon Pro SSG is a nice development but the lack of support from software vendors is killing it.

What you need for RC-X (and Davinci Resolve) in a GPU, is raw fp32 power and memory bandwith. Besides that, you also need a lot of CPU power to decode R3D.

The current fastest GPU's from NVidia are:

GV100, 14,8 TFlops fp32, 32 GB, memory bandwith 870 GB/s ~ € 10.000 (support for 10 bits OpenGL)
TitanV, 12,3..14,8 TFlops fp32, 12 GB, memory bandwith 652 GB/s ~ € 3.000
P6000, 12 TFlops fp32, 24 GB, memory bandwith 432 GB/s ~ € 5.000 (support for 10 bits OpenGL)
TitanX(p), 11,3..12,1 TFlops fp32, 12 GB, memory bandwith 547 GB/s ~ € 1.200
GTX1080ti 10,6..11,3 TFlops fp32, 11 GB, memory bandwith 484 GB/s ~ € 1.000
P5000, 8,9 TFlops fp32, 16 GB, memory bandwith 288 GB/s ~ € 2.000 (support for 10 bits OpenGL)

AMD
Radeon Pro WX9100, 12,2 TFlops fp32, 16 GB, memory bandwith 484 GB/s ~ € 1.700 (support for 10 bits OpenGL).

At this moment only the GV100 and the TitanV can saturate 8 lanes of PCIe-3, no GPU can saturate 16 lanes of PCIe-3 at the moment.

I have used every card on Misha's list and my order of preference if money were no object, especially with Premiere:

GV100, TitanV, TitanXp, P6000, 1080Ti, SSG, P5000, WX9100

If price/performance is a consideration, then this is the order:

1080Ti, TitanXp, P5000, Titan V, WX9100, GV100, P6000, SSG

If you are at all interested in GPU Rendering performance as well then the order would change again.
