When OConnor first introduced our new handgrip system at NAB 2010 they won the DV Black Diamond Award for outstanding achievement in the advancement of the art and science of video technology. This was due to the innovative features such as a bridge which not only incorporated all three rod standards (the first to do this) but also will clear a dovetail so the operator can quickly go from a tripod to handheld. They have the highest payload capacity of any ball jointed system- up to 44 lbs. Each module can be adjusted in a half sphere single handedly; even on the fly with the camera balanced on your shoulder. When two (or more) modules are joined together via the industry standard 3/8’s male and female connectors their ranges combine for unprecedented articulation.

What the team at OConnor immediately found interesting was all the alternative non-traditional applications people began to brainstorm for their use above and beyond handgrips. Some of the suggestions:

The O-Grips as a top handle with monitor mount-

The O-Grips as an on-the fly camera platform-

The O-Grips as an articulating suction cup mount-

These are just some of the suggestions we have been given but are sure there are countless others.

We at OConnor would like to reach out the REDuser community to know what others applications YOU would envision to be helpful on set?

Now here’s the best part; the top three suggestions as judged by the OConnor team will each receive a single jointed set of O-Grips- a $1200.00 retail value!

You have until NAB 2011 to post your ideas and the winners will be announced during the show in Las Vegas.

Pictures of your applications posted to this thread certainly would be appreciated and won’t hurt your chances of winning!

Best of luck to everyone,

Would be cool if there was a plate with a 150mm bowl on it where I could mount a couple of O-Grips in each of the four corners for super adjustable low mode stuff. Maybe with a hard-rubber ball at the end that I could screw onto the O-Grips for protections and anti-skidding. Effectively a 4-legged hi-hat with adjustable O-Grips for legs (possibly with wheels on each leg) :-)

Put one of these mayberry studio equipment brackets in the middle of a set of two O-Grips:

Now you can defend yourself and your camera from would-be thieves and attackers...

You heard it here first! And if you can lend me a set for a day I can make an instructional video about it.

some sort of custom car mount or body mount which can be folded into a small package, is light. able to hold a DSLR or medium sized camera (epic/scarlet) flexible arms using o-grip technology and is easy to use.

Wow! All of these just suck so bad. I thought with some (expensive according to some of you) gear we could get O-Grips going.

Apparently I need to send demo O-Grips to my people at http://www.younglionstudio.com/

They should be able to come up with a few ideas…

Well we could come up with ideas Eric, but we want one that will win right?

Great name by the way!

Not at all..we should demo these to you and others. EMail me the details and I'll get you a set of grips.

I'm not sure of the name you are asking about but this is my real one?

Anyone can win...and you have a better chance than these guys.

Haha Eric, you are so funny .... well, the problem is that usually I require 50% down for any work that I do -- so I would need at least one grip to get started ;)

Anyway, here's one of my ideas ... the Epic and Scarlet are very mobile cameras, right? At the same time, they are a bit heavy to be holding all day. But locking them up on a tripod all day messes up the mobility a bit in my eyes ...

So here's one of my thoughts ... you create a square-like "cage" around the base plate using the Ogrips. Then the Epic or Scarlet goes in the middle. This cage is highly stable, and awesome on it's own. But at the same time, it can also be mounted to a monopod and presto -- you have awesome stability but also mobility at the same time. Move the monopod and Ogrip cage around (even attach things to the cage) and then shoot with high stability on the Epic or Scarlet, without a tripod or shoulder rig.

So there you have it, that's one of my ideas, I will submit a couple more before NAB.

Thanks for being part of the best support/accessory company out there :)

Hey dude - the only thing that sucks about O-Chuk's (TM) is getting smacked in the head with one.

I'll toss another idea in the ring though...

Swing them so that they act as a parallax finder on top of the camera (left and right frame markers to your "eye" from operating position for a given focal length like this:

This method is known as the O'Grips Sportsfinder

Well - thanks for that. Now I feel like a complete idiot for giving you an idea for further product development. :confused5:

It's sometimes necessary to engage in repartee with all the comedians... all serious ideas are of course welcome. (Comedic ideas... ok, but be ready to take as good as you can give.) Like I said, we don't want to bias the kinds of ideas that come in by giving our opinions before the deadline, so we have to hold back a bit and avoid saying "awesome!" straight off the bat. But some of these have already been very good.

I'm fleshing my idea out more.

Having 2 ogrips on the rails as normal to use as a shoulder mount, when I'm shooting, run into the chase jeep, flip to grips around as a top handle, and hang it out the side. getting the dust of the jeeps flying by.

Not sure if it qualifies as a unique or special application but what attracts me is the ability to precisely manage how I balance and hold the camera. Specifically, as an hand held operator, how I can compensate for the bio mechanics of the human body to reduce fatigue and execute smooth movements.

I love that you are reaching out for ideas, but be proud of what the O-Grips are designed to do and how enabling they can be for the compact form factor that RED has achieved with the Epic and Scarlet models. By allowing many different grip angles, articulations and body/camera positions it empowers my creativity as an operator and that's cool.

Additional functionality on my wish list would be the ability to integrate servo actuation like buttons, rockers, joysticks, etc that would allow me to adjust FIZ and record/stop without taking my hands off the O-Grips. Much of this looks to be possible with RED's side handle, but in my perfect world I would control one variable (likely zoom) with my right hand and another (likely focus) with my left hand. If the O-Grip could allow ergonomic and secure mounting of control mechanisms that would rock.

My two cents anyway.

Cheers - #19

I'm pretty damn sure that no matter what I come up with, I ain't gonna win!

So I'll sit back and watch the race.

For the hell of it, I saw 4 O-grips and some skateboad wheels turn into a pretty cool table top camera dolly once. That was pretty cool.. There's a picture somewhere.
