  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Will Scarlet record audio?

I see no indications anywhere that this camera includes audio as an option.
Seems strange to me, since the Red ONE and Epic both have audio options. Of the three cameras, the Scarlet seems like the one that audio would be most important. The Epic and Red ONE I can see myself using on shoots where audio would be recorded separately by a recordist. The Scarlet target audience (DVXers and HVXers) depend on recording audio to the camera.

I guess without audio, the Scarlet will make a great second unit camera?

I would be a little surprised if Scarlet didn't support audio.

The specifications look like a pretty quick summary that just hits the highlights - I wouldn't be surprised if the audio was just industry standard and so it didn't merit a bullet point.

I'm sure we'll learn more long before we are asked to buy the camera.

I say great, given the hassles with Red One audio I'm happy they keep prices low and don't try to do audio.

Just give us a timecode connector and we (or sound recordist) can record to a Sound Devices 702T slung over our shoulder. $2500 - and you'd have something that'd record amazing-quality audio for years (audio is a mature technology IMHO), with real pots, LEDs, etc.

I would love for someone at the show give us a confirmation one way or the other as to whether or not the Scarlet (as of now) will have on board audio.

The lack of audio specs, the small size of the cam, and the price point all seem to point to no audio capabilities - but that would be an awfully disappointing move.

Please at least include a digital audio input (I assume a digital audio input could be implemented for less money than a decent analogue stereo pre-amp + ADC) so we can use off-board ADCs whilst still keeping out audio synced.

http://www.alesis.com/io2 - $129 - USB connectivity...hook that up to the USB port and you have audio....just an idea! RED could license one of these solutions and have 2 full sized XLRs without compromising body size.

Come on, get real--it has to have audio capabilities--it's a modern digital camera--it has to. It doesn't say the sensor is color, either, but we certainly can assume it is.

Maybe it will be XLR, maybe onboard--but it will definately have audio of some kind--you can count on it.

With ALL due respect.........

i'm honestly very happy that you have the resources to drop $3000 on the camera (the current rumor), another $2500 on your audio recorder, pay a sound recordist, and have the time to sync it in post (i realize TC makes it faster, but it's still an extra step).

And I have to carry an extra piece of gear?

IMHO, that doesn't work for most of Scarlet's target audience. I could be wrong.

I'd be happy with one xlr input. Most of what I do is shoot with one shotgun mic anyway, or alternately, one body mic. 'Course, i wouldn't say no to additional options....

a good solution.

hopefully they have - or will make - something a bit smaller than can mount to one of the mounting points on the metal body.

use it when you need it, leave it off when you don't. completely modular.

the only issue is: can Scarlet do this? (I can't see why it wouldn't be able to...)

I see on the brochure what looks like a bnc under the usb ports on the back, if that is an audio jack... I'm a wedding videographer and I really need two. :waaa: I've been waiting for the Scarlet announcement before making a decision about upgrading to some flavor of HD.

I'd pay more for the audio option, as an indie, I really can't afford a seperate audio deck

And what exactly makes you believe that Scarlet's target audience inherently single-system?

There is no way this camera will not have audio inputs. Don't worry, its just the prototype and they haven't figured out what audio inputs they can fit in for the price they are charging. But they WILL be there. ...... they HAVE to be.....

People, relax.

Mark my words: the Scarlet is going to be modulair. $3,000 base price. Basic unit with lens. You want audio? Audio module with 2-XLR inputs/outputs and phantom power? You want handles? Buy the handles. I am pretty convinced that this camera will be completely modulair like the RED. So you can buy everything you want, and it will add to the price.
